I really don't understand signing Kovy, not one bit. Also, Phaneuf's salary is 6,5M with 6M cap hit if Kings were to retain 1M. Carolina might take Hossa's contract to reach the floor but not Phaneuf's cos they have to actually pay him A LOT. Amd Carolina is a team that simply doesn't spend their money.

You don't just retain the cap hit, you retain the salary too. The Kings only pay him $4.875M this season, so if the Kings retained 20%, his salary cap on Carolina would be $4.2M, but Carolina would only owe him $3.9M. It goes down even more for the final two seasons.

I'm not saying I agree with the Kovalchuk signing, but if Phaneuf was traded, the team that acquired him wouldn't have to pay a lot as you suggest.

Phaneuf's salary is 6,5 6,5 and 5,5M. It's a lot for a team like Carolina that isn't willing to pay really anyone. And 1M retained from 7M is 14%.

You're forgetting that Ottawa has already retained a portion of his salary. That portion doesn't pass to Carolina.
