Much of the appeal for Tavares going to the Leafs would be the fact that he won't have to carry the entire franchise. He'd be able to go there and be a star among their stars. Matthews is one of a small handful of players that just can't be traded unless its for another generational centre.

Think McDavid for Matthews +

Generational Talent level centres come around once every 5 years or so, if you get one, you just don't trade them.

Um Petro by himself is all STL will give you just over killed and Armstrong says hell no. We don’t want a guy who complains about ice time for that.

Yes, I'm sure that you are correct. With that said, STL is unlikely to land generational talent through the draft. Point in case - the only time that I recall the Blues drafting first overall they picked Eric Johnson. Not Staal, not Toews. Shoot me in the face. Honestly, I'm just hoping that Shanahan has lost his mind and finds something like this appealing.

Shanahan is one of the only people in the sport that seems to think big picture constantly, he isn't worried about saving his job, making a big splash or in appeasing fans who want to see big moves all the time. He has a process, sees where the league is going and trusts his man Dubas to make moves that will improve the team both short term and in the long term. Its why the leafs haven't signed veterans for long term over priced deals.

You make that trade in a heartbeat. Unfortunately no team would trade a player like Mathews for that return. Maybe if petro was a young lidstrom or pronger. Honestly outside of petro, the rest are just throw ins and scratch off lotto tickets. It’s really petro for Mathews...and yes, if your the blues you do that all day long.

But I’m not giving an arm and a leg with Prospects and giving up top Defense for a kid who whines about everything. If I’m gonna get someone with skill I don’t want someone who will cry about time on ice. Therefore I will either go for Tavares or Leon Drasaitl

Robert Thomas (18) is not a throw in. Fabbri (22), if his knee has mended, is a #1 or #2 LW. Thompson is still 20 years old, not sure where his ceiling is, but he will play in the NHL for a long time. Not sure that Schmaltz would stick in the top six on a team with a solid D-corp, but we are talking Toronto. I can see Toronto not accepting any offer for Matthews, but this deal is not going to hurt your team.

It’s armstrong not Shanahan shows how much you know about the Blues.
