How to return to glory: The Blackhawks' Plan

Created by: kopiino
Team: 2018-19 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 2, 2018
Published: Jul. 2, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
There's only one way to win a cup. The Hawks tried it last season, but didn't go full effort into it.

That's right, to win another cup, let's just bring back the players that won it for us! Instead of working hard on a rebuild and realizing that we aren't contenders, let's bring in some washed-up guys who's names are on Lord Stanley.

Wrap up Crow and Hossa in some bubble wrap and they'll be ready to play next season. Brad Richards would be easily enticed back with a few dollars and some free food from the concessions stands, albeit only giving him fourth line time.

Brandon Saad isn't performing... But he won the cup with us! Give him a 6 year deal and continue to waste cap space. Besides, we don't need a 2nd or 3rd pairing of D-men when we have Keith and Seabrook's horrible, horrible contracts. Wait, Hjalmarsson and Oduya still play? Well what are we waiting for, we just got our second pairing!

We don't need a future when we can win the cup this year! Let's trade any and all draft picks for a 32-year-old Kris Versteeg and 32-penalty-minutes-a-game Andrew Shaw. Full-proof plan and I'll be expecting a call from the Hawks organization sometime soon.

Yes, but let's face it. They just don't fit the bill. Byfuglien is too good to be playing on the third pair and how would we be able to afford him when we need to be paying Hossa 5mil and Shaw 3mil. And there's no fifth line here so Ladd has no room to play! And we need to keep the fresh cup winners in, 2010 was ages ago, 2015 sees like it was just yesterday!

This is funny.

However, Keith is not on a "horrible, horrible contract". He's been on one of the best contracts in the league since it was signed. And he's still very much playing at a $5.5M level and probably will for another few years.
Meanwhile Seabrook has the league's worst contract.

Within the current regime, will Keith remain number 1 dman for his duration? Or will someone else step up/be added and allow Duncs to transition into a lesser role? This is all on the GM and the HC to be on the same page so Keith doesn’t burn out when he is required to play all situations 25+ minutes a night. To me, that is not a recipe for much success going forward!

I'd take Lucic's for sure.

Seabrook is 33 and has 6 more years on his deal. He's shown REAL signs of decline for the past 3 seasons. His contract is 6.875 AAV and severely front loaded. It is basically buyout proof due to the drastic changes in base salary in the final 4 years of the deal.

Lucic is 30 and has 5 more years on his deal. He had one down year. Sign of decline? Possibly. He's only making 6M AAV and while slightly front loaded its not as much as Seabrook's. His also has a variation in salary in teh final 3 years but not as drastic.
