Will Holland ever accept a rebuild? He could get a lot of futures for Nyquist, Howard, Green, etc.
How has Holland not accepted the rebuild? Let's look at the trades Holland has done in the last two years:
2017-18:
- Trades away Datsyuk contract and drafts Cholowski and Hronek with the picks received. Clears away the cap hit of Datsyuk contract.
- Trades Brendan Smith for a 2nd and 3rd round pick.
- Trades Vanek for a 3rd round pick.
- Trades Ott for a 6th round pick.
- Trades Sheahan basically for a 3rd round pick.
2018-19:
- Trades Mrazek for a 3rd and 4th round picks.
- Trades Tatar for a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks.
- Would have traded Green had he not injured his neck.
How is that not accepting a rebuild? We are traded away players for assets. We had 10 picks this year, 4 of them in the top 36, and we have 11 for the 2019 draft. You may disagree on Hollands philosophy of surrounding young talent with proven veterans. I don't agree with some of his signings but I understand where he is coming from. You look at Edmonton and Buffalo and Arizona, they have been going through a rebuild for a decade and they are just coming out of that now. They didn't ice a competitive team for years and the young players were worn out from losing. Look at how a team change affected Hall this year, getting the Hart trophy. I accept Hollands assertions that you need to put out a competitive team and show your young players you're not going to leave them out to dry. You're going to surround them with players to help them succeed.
I agree that Holland can get futures for Nyquist and we should definitely try to trade him this year. Green we can trade next year at the deadline like we tried to do this year. An NTC just covers Green from being traded to a team not considered a contender. Howard is an interesting case as we do not have a starting goalie past this year. Bernier has proven himself to be a serviceable backup and should not be seen as someone who can take over starting duties. I can see Detroit extending Howard 2 more years while we rebuild. We also have Vanek that we can try to trade for picks at the deadline, although I don't know what we would get back in return.
Holland has to do some cap juggling with the contracts that we do have now, but he has successfully done that in the past. He has not signed a contract in the past 2-3 years that hasn't hampered our future. With the draft we just had, our defense prospects developing nicely, our future is looking good and the rebuild is going well.
