Lines and Ice Time Ideas: Read Description

Created by: KoneDome
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 7, 2018

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- I think the Nylander deal is very fair based on Elhers (6X6) and Pastrnak (6.6X6)
- I added Myers/Gardiner deal, but its not the focus of this post. I think trade works for both teams. WPG gets 2m in cap space and a puck moving defenceman. TOR gets a defensively responsible Dman to play with Reilly. Both are UFAs at end of year.

For Ice Time: The leafs have 3 very good lines that can be devastating for opposition to match up against. The idea here is that you roll 3 lines essentially and your 4th line wingers can be PP/PK specialists. 4th Line C may only get 6-8 minutes.

3rd Line: This line can be elite defensively, and this line can be matched up against other teams best offensive line (like they did in playoffs). Kadri is good defensively and you have two wingers that can fly and are good defensively and very hard working. Brown and Kapanen can be swapped back and forth depending on how they are playing. At even strength this line can play 15-16 minutes at even strength.

2nd Line: This Line may likely get the toughest defensive matchups, but thats alright, they're good enough. Hyman will work to get the puck to skill players of Marner and Tavares. This line could play 18-19 minutes at even strength.

1st Line: Ideally, this line will get a favourable match up with focus on Tavares/Marner line. This line could dominate if they have good matchups. Also give this line 18-19 minutes at even strength.

4th Line: This line really should only get maybe 1-2 shifts at even strength per period. The wingers will contribute on special teams. I would also let Jooris and Lindholm fit it out for 4C. I would probably choose whichever of the two that can also contribute on PK, don't know either player well. This line could play 4-5 minutes at even strength per game.

- PP Last Year: Leafs averaged 4:20 per game
- PK Last Year: Leafs averaged 4:45 per game

This would have ice times ideally at:
- Matthews: 21-22 minutes
- Tavares: 21-22 minutes
- Kadri: 18-19 minutes
- Marner: 19-20 minutes
- Nylander: 19-20 minutes

For Defence: I would let Carrick, Rosen, Ozhiganov, and Borgman battle it out for the 6th spot.

Why does Toronto need to retain salary for one year of Jake Gardiner? Winnipeg has a ton of cap space for this year.

I always wonder how Nylander gets compared to Ehlers and Pastrnak, and then makes more money than them both when they've outscored him. Ehlers is 6M for 7 years and seems like the high bar for Nylander.

I'd like Myers too but Gardiner is better, cheaper, and more durable.

I think Nylander is pretty similar to Ehlers, but I gave Nylander more mostly because of cap going up fairly significantly since Ehlers signed.

And by playoff time they will be all burned out...

Play 4 lines, and cut the bench when needed...

Well they should be up 4-0 every game after the second period, so then they can spread ice time.

That's the common misconception with Ehlers. He may have signed last year but his contract kicks in now and they knew what the cap was roughly going to be at the time.
NHL GM'S think ahead, fans look back.

I don't know why folks think the offensive output should be much different than last year. Just be going be your roster, Tavares outscores Bozak, but Johnson isn't going to match the JVR totals. Leafs would probably lose offense in Gardiner trade.
