Panarin will take more money than that. By next summer he'll have a bunch of offers for $11 mil.

Yeah, that's probably true. Rangers also might not want to pay Hayes 5M to play the 3rd line, so they could also deal him off as well. The point of this construction is to highlight they can have both Karlsson and Panarin and keep the the rebuild alive if they wish to. And moving forward their cap structure is outstanding.

I don't see how Brendan Smith has any positive trade value, esp. at full price. He hasn't played in more than 44 NHL games for the last 3 seasons. No team is trading for him unless they are getting a really nice pick or prospect in return. Especially with 2 years remaining on the deal. And of all teams the Penguins don't make sense because they are going to be tight vs the cap and have no use for him.

I expect a bounce back year from him, and at 2 years on his deal for that price seeing what other D men are getting is not bad.
