Karlsson, Ryan, Dallas, Chicago

Created by: HawksFan28
Team: 2018-19 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 11, 2018
Published: Jul. 11, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This trade gets Ottawa to the cap floor (while being under in actual salary), while they move both Karlsson & Ryan at the same time.... No team could logically take both Karlsson & Ryan in the same deal, but if the Hawks stepped in and took Ryan while sending Hossa's contract the other way Ottawa gets an 8.9 million dollar cap hit for 3.625 in actual salary (Hossa's 5.275 cap hit + Ryan's 3.625 cap hit).....

As far as the return on Karlsson, I don't know if I'm close. It seems Dorion has little flexibility so Dallas is in the drivers seat on this one....

As far as the Sens roster - I'm not a Sens fan so I don't know how to fill it out.... I mean the purpose of this post was the 3-way trade..

To Sens: Hossa, Johns, Faksa, 1st..
To Hawks: Ryan (@50%)
To Dallas: Karlsson

I think all three teams get what they want/need given the circumstances.

the CHI trade is interesting. I can kinda see it and i can kinda not see it. I HIGHLY doubt OTT will look to retain any bit of Ryan's salary, but this kinda is actually pretty mutual for both teams. i just dont know if Chicago would rather have Hossa's contract on IR for a full 5 mil of cap to play with in season. or an actual 2nd line winger in Ryan for 3.5 ish million.

But that DAL trade is a steal. If i was them i would take that and run. I get Karlsson for a top six forward, top 4 d man, and a first that will most likely be at 20th pick at least with Karlsson. and i get to keep my two best defensive prospects.... YUP. That would end Dorion's career as a gm.

What Ottawa gets from the Hawks is cap hit which they will need if they're moving Karlsson and Ryan... Ottawa basically gets an 8.9 million dollar cap hit for 3.625 in actual salary... Of course Ottawa can go about hitting the cap floor other ways but you would figure a 5.275 cap hit for 1 million in actual insured salary would be tempting.... I mean if Ottawa can manage to deal Ryan they're going to have to take salary back in the deal - but they can avoid that by just retaining half of Ryan's contract and taking Hossa's cap hit...

I mean no team is waiting in line to take Ryan and his 7.250 cap hit and no team will without sending salary back, but like I said - Hossa's salary is only 1 million insured but carries a 5.275 cap hit..... The cap floor is 58.8 million and they're presently below that.

It will be interesting to see how this Karlsson/Ryan thing plays out - it's clearly holding up the league that's for sure.

Ottawa wouldn’t really need hossa’s Cap hit since they still need to resign Ceci (~3.5 million) and Stone (7-8 mill) but I can see them doing it if they don’t retain.

Chicago can't and won't do it if they don't retain. This doesn't happen without Ryans contract at 50% retained.

Not enough back for Karlsson. Tatar got a 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Karlsson can get more. I'd be happy with Heiskanen + Faksa + 1st for Karl.

I wonder though, how long is the Melnyk/Dorion plan to rebuild? Yeah, Bobby Ryan has four years left on that terrible contract, but if they plan on spending a few years rebuilding, might he be willing to take that shot in the mouth to get rid of him? Probably not, but ya never know... I went to go look at ryan's contract to see if it was somehow front loaded and therefore worth it to The Sens to retain, but it isn't. Really seems like anything involving the Hawks and Ryan isn't going to work.

Agreed, if I'm Ottawa and Dallas isn't willing to part with Heiskanen, I tell them to take a long walk to get fuckedville.

IDK, it seems Dorion is in a pretty helpless situation... He's put himself in a situation where Karlsson dictates everything... If he's only willing to go to Dallas then what?.. What if Dallas only offers a 2nd round pick? what is Dorion going to do? refuse to trade Karlsson, then make him play this season..

It's a weird situation, and IMO I think it's holding up the rest of the league in what they're planning to do...... It seems Eirk Karlsson, not Toronto is the center of the hockey universe right now, lol..

One thing is certain tho, I just cant see a team taking both Karlsson and Ryan at their full cap hit/contract...... I mean I'm sure a team would do both Karlsson and Ryan for a 3rd round pick or something weird like that..... The fact Dorion is demanding that Ryan is included in any deal tells me that no team wants anything to do with Ryan's contract and he knows he has no shot at trading Ryan at all without him being attached to Karlsson......... That's why I made this 3-way proposal ... Ryan at 3.625 is reasonable but not 7.250....

If I'm Dorion, I don't take a complete dogshit offer in the off season. I let Karlsson play out that last year and attempt to get better offers during the trade deadline. And I think he would get better offers at that time. Risky? Of course, but taking a total crap offer this summer makes him the instant town fool, at least trying to salvage a better offer out of a trade deadline situation makes it seem like he's trying to get the most value for what he knows he's going to lose.

I also agree with you, I'd definitely take Bobby Ryan at 3.625. I think he'd actually do well playing with 19 & 20, and if the fit isn't quite right, I'm pretty sure he's played LW, so play him with 88. Options are there, as is a chance for Ryan, who's always been the redheaded stepchild, to step up and redeem his detractors.
