Slightly too much for Wilson and Bowey. Ness not a good option. I think GMBM will bring in a vet D man at 1mil or so as insurance, possibly Orpik.

The last rumor I heard was the Caps offered Wilson 6 yr $27m w/ AAV of $4.5m so this would be about right for him but Willy may be holding off for less term to bank on himself hitting FA sooner. If we give him fewer years, Caps won't go higher on AAV. Bowey though, I agree. He won't get more than $1m IMO

I'm thinking a guy like Orpik, Enstrom, or Emelin might be coming in to fill that 6/7 D role.

Emelin or Orpik would be my first choices because they consistently put up 180 hits a year and kill penalties. Hamhuis eats more minutes, plays tougher zone starts, and has a teaspoon more offense, but is good for only 100 hits a year. Sbisa and Enstrom filled depth offensive roles on some good teams last year but have each fallen off offensively. Franson could be cheap and has one season where he put up 280 hits, but just one. Have to ask him whether he wants to play like that again. If so, and if the price is right, Franson and and Emelin together could be the 3rd pair to counter a nasty team like the Flyers or Islanders in the playoffs. I think the Caps already have the lineup they need to keep up with the skill teams or outscore a trap team, so it's worth looking at how to replace or bring back Orpik, who, along with WIlson, supplied a large part of this team's grit. Emelin and Franson will both be 31 to start the season. Orpik will be 38 by the all star break. Hamhuis is a better skater than any of them, but is 35, not as tough, and might cost more, enough that you don't get one of the others. I think Emelin would be a great fit, but I don't know how he'd feel about the 1.2Mx3yrs I'd want to offer him. Orpik's already familiar with the team, but is old enough that you sign him one year at a time, If you pay him for his regular season performance it's a million. If another team wants to pay him for how he stepped up in the playoffs, he might get 3M or so. At that point the Caps can't afford him.
