I think Hanifin wants more if it's for 6 years. I don't think he'll get less than what dumba got. Almost 40 points last year, still really young, and he was an all star. Not saying I actually think he's a great defender, but I think he'll demand more...

morgan rielly contract is a cood comparable for hanifin. Points in the 30 range and still much to prove. With the cap crunch you have to think calgary doesnt want to exceed 5 million. You're right though he may want 5 and shorter term.

That's a really good comparable actually! Both picked 5th overall. Rielly's original cap hit percentage was 7.00, so adjusted for cap inflation Hanifin should get 5.6 million on a 6 year deal. However I've heard rumors that one of the reasons hanifin was traded was because he was wanting a lot of money for a long term contract, and Carolina didn't want to pay him that much. You gotta think if that's true, and dougie Hamilton was actually a cheaper option for Carolina, maybe hanifin wanted 6.0-6.5 for a long term deal. Which is scary, seeing as I really don't think he's earned it.

32 is not almost 40 points. by your rounding scheme McDavid almost had 200 points last season.
He was an All-star on a team that had next to zero talent last season
He wanted a lot of money to stay in Carolina because they are a perennial bottom of the league team.
If the flames give him anywhere near 6 million it will be a massive overpay for a guy who has potential but really hasn't proven him self. he was a -20 last season (and hasn't been positive in his career) even on a bad team that's really bad for a top 3 defenseman
if he wants long term it will have to be at a number like 4.5-5 Mil because anything more is too much of a gamble for the flames
TJ brodie had the same amount of points as him with a better plus minus at 4.65 Mil and in my opinion brodie had a terrible year
I think 3-4 year Short term Bridge deal at 4.5 to 5 is what he will get. if he proves him self in Calgary then he will get paid once Giordano's contract is over
he wasn't even in the top 40 defenseman in the league last season for points

this is what Calgary's position is when negotiating this contract

I was wrong, thought it was 38 for some reason. My bad!
