How does it look with extending Gardiner

Created by: jloose
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 15, 2018
Published: Aug. 15, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Extending Gardiner at 6x6. Could he get more? probably.

Ellis at 6.5mil could push gardiner down to 6.
Left side on D will be pretty strong.
Still a weak right side, unless zaitsev rebounds and liljegren can play.

IMO Gardiner is, just like JVR, signing elsewhere on July 1st 2019.

Jake is 28 years old. If he has good seaon (like JVR) he will have priced himself out of Toronto. If he has a so so seasons, Leafs don't need him, at his cap hit 2019/20 LHD will Reilly, Dermot and some one else but Gardiner. I'm optimistic about Borgman, maybe Rosen.

Ya I agree. Better places to use that money (RD).
Was just looking at how it would/could work

Jake Gardiner is a good player, he scores a lot of points and does a lot of things well. With that said, he also does some really bad things and he's turning 28 and looks to me like he's already lost a step. He is not even close to worth 6 million and if you give him that kind of money, you are kissing one of Nylander or Marner good by and both of those players are better than Gardiner by a huge margin. Gardiner will get that kind of money on the open market and that is why I'm not supporting his signing. Better money can be spent in house or with cheaper depth options.

I think with his offensive he should probably be in the ball park closer to subban and Doughty 10M a year easy. The next Norris Trophy winner.

I mean it's a little aggressive to say "he's not even close to worth that much" but okay.
And does this team not kind of prove that you don't have to say goodbye to nylander or marner?

Anyway, I agree its better to spend money elsewhere, but that elsewhere should probably be RD. Too bad they are unicorns

Well you are over the salary cap, and I think Nylander is going to get 8 years and it'll be closer to 7+ which is a fair deal for him, Marner will be closer to 8. Also with the depth on the left side, spending that much money on Gardiner seems silly. Dermott I think will be a better defenceman, especially in his own zone, so why give big bucks to an inferior expendable player.

After thinking about long and hard the Leafs should do what they can to keep the great Gardiner maybe trade Mathews would be a good option use his money and give Gardner some of his salary and then we can give him the key to the city. Wow can’t believe that people real give a **** about a crapy dman. Wow
