Why would a rebuilding team trade away a top-2 forward prospect and top-2 defensive prospect in their system as well as a 1st round pick when they are not even competitive to get to the playoffs?

The only way this deal makes sense is if the Karlsson extension has already been negotiated, but even then his age probably doesn’t make him the best fit for the rest of Van’s young core. And I’m a huge Karlsson fan so it pains me to say that.
