Habs Go Extreme on Finland-Russia Talent (apologies PHI, FLA, TOR, TB, etc.

Created by: RoadRunner72
Team: 2018-19 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 23, 2018
Published: Aug. 23, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Team philosophy switches wildly as they try to build around a couple of young Finnish prospects. If Kovalchuk can still play at 35 why not bring back some golden greats to fill the empty roster spots with talent and grit (maybe not much speed though) on entry level contracts.

As far as I know only one player was brought back from the grave, but he was a heck of a player (Kharlamov).

They'll draft Kaako and Podkolzin in first round next summer to ensure there's some young blood coming into the system as Kharlamov and Selanne slow down. Even with all these moves, it's a bit weak down the middle until Kotka matures. Maybe Malkin is available....Right shot D is a problem so I kept Juulsen and Petry for now.

Oversize roster but still under the cap. Those over-40 veteran contracts are awesome! Might have to give Kharlamov and Tretiak some old-age bonuses.
Nice balance of veterans and young stars/prospects. Would be nice to find room for Datsyuk and Laine.

Flyers missing piece to be top 10 is a dominant goalie. Let's assume he's got 5 years left in the tank to help the Flyers. I could also sign another legendary Russian d-man (maybe Konstantinov) to top up that trade for you.

The original offer for Kharlamov was $1M, and it was turned down. You'll need to pay a bit more.

Hab fans love living in the past mentioning all the Cups they have won. Most people on CapFriendly can't weren't even alive when the Habs last won in 1993,
    Those signing, keep reminiscing.

If you want Heiskanen, the conversations starts with Jesperi Kotkaniemi + another piece. For Dallas, any return on that kind of prospect is all about quality over quantity. If they are giving up a top prospect, they are getting a top prospect back in return.

    this is a joke right

Considering half the players listed on here peaked between 1975 and 2000, yes its fair to say this is a joke. I like the history of the game, and that's why I enjoyed doing it. Like I said one of the best players on here died over 30 years ago in his prime.

I would outbid any GM for Kharlamov if he were still available.

Better than living in the present. Habs have a couple of dark years ahead but it will get better. By the way none of the old players listed were on any of those Montreal championship teams. Although they drafted Tretiak when he was 30 years old or so he never played with them.

Understood - I'd feel the same way if my team had his rights. But wouldn't you rather have rights to the greatest Russian player of all time??? Heiskanen for Kharlamov straight up...no wait I changed my mind.
