Description
We should really upgrade the defence at least for this season before the huge contracts kick in.

Winnipeg trade- Reason Winnipeg does it is so they get rid of 5.5 million in cap space, pick up a back up goalie, a 4th line LW and a first round pick for essentially a year long rental. They already have Trouba and Buff down the right side so this gives them a chance to develop someone into a 3rd RD at a fraction of the cost.

Calgary Deal: This one is unlikely unless they really want to get out from under the Hamonic deal. Right now, he would probably be the 2nd RD on the team, this trade allows them to save a year off of the contract, replace Hamonic with Hainsey short term and get essentially 3 second round picks in the process. Hamonic has a fairly good contract for a defence only defensemen hence the higher price.

Should both these trades work, I expect the short term pairings to be

Rielly-Hamonic
Gardiner-Zaitsev
Dermott-Myers

and every single one of those players can play 20 minutes a night should there be a need.

We give up a lot of the future but even then, for the following year, the lines could look like:

No way you will be able to resign Myers next year cause of Cap....neither Gardiner.....so blank shot here

Yeah, it is unlikely we get both but we could squeeze in Gardiner, it would be for one year until Marleau comes off and then we should be okay again. We gain 4.5 million if we replace Myers with Liljegren, plus if you take into account the 4.05 we are paying Gardiner, the 1.3 million going to Carrick, the 5 million going to the RFAs (Kapenen, Johnsson,Marner,Matthews and Lindholm), the cap space currently of 7.5 million plus an increase in cap space of about 3.5 million, it would give us about 26 million. We can then either Robidas island Marleau or trade him to free up another 6 million giving us roughly 32 million.

Assuming:

Matthews-11 mil/year
Marner- 7.5 mil/year
kapenen and Johnsson- 2.5 mil/year
Lindholm- 750,000 k/year

we would still have 7.75 million to sign Gardiner and mediocre LW like Ennis for 650,000k. I think Gardiner at 5 years for 5.5-6 million would be fair. Lines would be:

Hyman-Tavares-Marner
Grundstrom-Matthews-Nylander
Johnsson-Kadri-Kapenen
UFA-Lindholm-Brown

Rielly-Hamonic
Gardiner-Zaitsev

Mason is gone, Hutchinson signed with another team. Broissot is a horrible #2 goalie so Comrie would have to take over the back up spot meaning Manitoba Moose have a goaltending problem.

I would imagine that the Jets want Myers for their playoff run instead of the first rounder. Leivo is insignificant in an NHL trade and Pickard is an AHLer.
Hamonic isn't better than Hainsey this year, So the Leafs are really trading Bracco and two second rounders for the 2019/20 versus of Hamonic.
In your reply in post # 3 you say the Leafs going to LTIR Marleau or trade him to save cap space....totally unrealistic. Marleau signed a three year NMC Leaf contract for a reason, acknowledge it.

From my simulations it would be wise to go in steps about D's, but im constantlly told we are ok as it is

2018/ 2019 Myers... 6M / 6y so you resign him next year, cause you dont acquire top 50 D's just to dump them later ( ofc next year Zaitsev needs to go cause of that )
2019/2020 Gardiner.....6M / 5y ( ofc you will have to dump Kadri cause you are building cup contender D lines now )

after those two years assuming Seattle is coming so you are able to protect Rielly, Myers and Gardiner

2020/ 2021 Montour....6M / 6y ( only UFA that will be under 30y when available )
