Quoting: Tobbish
If only the salary cap was 90 million dollars... and is it likely that Matthews will make less than Tavares? If he keeps putting up the numbers (not only scoring, but deeper statistics) like he does, I think Matthews might deserve near McDavid-money. Of course they will negotiate, but considering how most agents seem to work it might be tough. I wish that the players were more involved, because a lot of the time it feels like agent just push for as much money as possible, and it often make the player look greedy and lack heart. This is a tricky situation and someone will need to make sacrifices for the team to make this possible.
Mathews doesn't take less sadly, but I do see him taking the same. The conversation is easy on both sides.
Mathews explains, "I am better than Eichel and Toews and they are making 10/10.5 I deserve closer to McDavid money."
Dubas explains, "You are better than Eichel and Toews, but you aren't as good as McDavid. JT left close to 15mill on the table to sign with us and keep this core intact. We would like to see you do something similar. We'll offer you the same contract as JT but at 8 years."
After a lot of back and forth, eventually both sides agree. Marner will see the pay cut Mathew takes and do something similar, signing for 7-7.5mill. All of this is coming off Nylander who signs just shy of Pastrnak's 6.66 at 6.5mill.
Everyone in this organization has bought in, they understand this is a dynasty in the making. If everyone does their part from depth players to ELC contracts, this team will be impossible to beat. JT set the bar, he sent a HUGE message saying, "I'll take less to come home and win a cup". Everyone is going to remember that when they go to sign a contract. This is amazing for the team, and we'll be fine.
