If Sakic is going to get the kind of star Center who can anchor a scoring line and fits the young core's age range ideally, he's going to have to use that Ottawa pick, Barrie, or Makar as the centerpiece. For me, Makar is a lot more of a no-go than the Ottawa pick...even if they are as bad as all of us hope...in large part because of how both fit the team's timeline with that sweetheart MacKinnon-contract. So it's either something around the Ottawa pick or Barrie...depending on whether the team we're trading with wants more of hockey-trade or more of a future's trade...that makes the most sense to give this team the last key piece that's missing from truly contending. And I don't think Florida would be looking for a hockey trade if they moved Trocheck.
Edmonton is Sakic's best bet at prying out the kind of stud Center we need with a Barrie-based hockey trade IMO.
Plus using the Sens pick instead of Barrie to add this missing piece, lets the Avs make the most of MacKinnon's steal of a contract by opening their window this season. As the team has a dominant top line, a tough checking line lead by soda, excellent goalie depth, a good set of blueliner that could become extremely good if Makar hits the ground running when his college season ends, good special teams, and only lacks that one dynamic top liner to anchor a second reliable scoring line. If they had a Trocheck or Draisaitl caliber Center to anchor that 2nd line this season, playoff experience would be the only thing between them & a cup.
