This is surprisingly one of the mpre fair value Nylander trades I've seen. Not sure if VAN pulls the trigger tho. They already have a ton of young offense and Tanev is pretty much anchoring the D unless im forgetting someone

I love this trade, because if the Leafs move Nylander for a bag of junk, plus a 0.25 ppg defenseman, the Capitals chances to repeat are still decent.

They aren't looking for another offensive defenseman. They are looking for someone that can play defense

On the right side, they need both. They have a tough guy, a rookie, and a 38 year old lefty.

That's why I keep posting Niskanen, but Carlson would also solve it. Either one would halve the Caps' chances at winning back to back, but if next year might be a lockout, then it might be an okay time for Washington to think three and four postseasons ahead, by which time Bowey should handle a top four role pretty well. Carlson would cost a whole lot more than just Nylander, though. Like, Nylander, Liljegren, Sandin, 1st? But Toronto would win the Cup this year, and maybe two more of the next seven.

Caps aren't moving Nisky or JC for Nylander, even if they get a lot more

I could see a hard pass on Carlson. But Niskanen has two great years left and a three year contract. In a salary cap league, if there's a decent chance of a lockout next year, and the Leafs are gung ho about winning the Cup this year before the lockout ends their chances to win with Tavares under thirty as a youthful, energetic contributor.... I think adding another Burakovsky at a Niskanen cap hit for seven years is fine. After the lockout, that gives the Caps a lot of solid depth on the wings, and I think Bowey should be a 2RHD by then. It tanks this season, but they're starting super weak without Beagle and WIlson. Since Orpik's injured they're giving up two power play goals a game. If there's a lockout and they can get two high draft picks for one season of missing the playoffs, again... well... it worked well last time. Coming back with Ovechkin, Backstrom, Kuznetsov, Holtby, Orlov, Bowey, Djoos, and adding another above average wing under 25, plus two mid first rounders?

I mean, the alternative is to patch the PK immediately, make the playoffs, and win another Cup this year while Toronto keeps thinking slow build and misses their window entirely. smile

But to do that they'd need an experience penalty killing LHD while Orpik's out. Montreal fans say the price for Jordie Benn could be as high as... say.... Riley Barber?
