Marleau gets to stay where he wants to be, Leafs don't upset Marner and Matthews by trading away their backup dad.
Arizona gets a 2nd round pick for absorbing very little real money ($416,667 x 2). His full cap hit (6.25M) remains on their books for 2019-20 (helping them reach the floor as they have replacing Bolland's IR cap hit). Sent back Connauton as a bottom pairing D to the Leafs, saving Arizona another 1.5M real dollars. Could be any warm body though. Leafs could resign Hainsey to a 1 year 1M deal instead.
Seems like the sort of deal that two young GMs would make.
Marleau actually makes more real money in this scenario. Leafs likely keep him on after he retires at a sweet salary as a coach/consultant/scout since he wants his family in Toronto so his sons can play competitive hockey.
Resigned Gardiner at a team friendly deal, but they could choose to go after a UFA like Myers instead. I think Gardiner is the type to take less to stay where he is comfortable though.
Nylander deal is signed on December 1, maximizing the cap reduction in following years. Real deal is:
Traded after bonus is paid on July 1.
Handshake deal that ARZ buys out Marleau
Leafs resign Marleau on the cheap for one more year before 2019-2020 (similar to the WSH-COL deal with Orpik)
Zero chance this happens. AZ isn’t going to be cap dump central anymore. They’re paying their players and are getting closer to becoming playoff contenders.

yes, but they do not have anyone that requires a significant raise for next year left. So why not get a 2nd round pick for taking on marleaus cap hit for 1 year, and paying him 800K over two years because of a buyout. It's a win win. It makes AZ better long term with an extra high pick.
Literally everyone in this transaction benefits. Marleau gets more money, still plays for the leafs. Leafs get cap relief. Arizona gets a pick, and doesnt hurt their ability to sign anyone long term. what's not to like?
Best case scenario really. Everybody benefits from the signing bonus heavy contract here, although who ever took the buyout deal would take the full 6.25 cap hit, it would only cost the franchise 800k to buyout

Buying out Marleau doesn’t save any money. His cap hit is still the same 6.25M because he signed his contract after the age of 35.
Not to mention even if AZ somehow saved on the 6.25M they have 5 RFAs to pay plus a Keller extension.

Look the one issue with this trade is getting marleau to agree to it. That's it. There are literally no other issues with this trade .
It saves actual money if ARZ buys him out, not cap hit. Instead of paying his 1.25 mil of salary they pay 800K over two years, leafs cover the signing bonus, but ARZ would just have to manage the cap hit of 6.25 in 19/20.
keller doesn't require an extension until 20/21,, so not an issue. So you're left with panik, crouse, perlini, archibald, lyubushkin or miska needing significant raises for 19/20? that's what youre telling me. They don't and it's a non-issue.
Effectively ARZ gets a high pick for 800K, and no impact on signing anyone. Anymore questions?

Saves real money, not cap money. But next year ARZ has no one who is going to cost them the 10M in cap cushion they will have. Keller extension won't kick in until 2020-2021, when Marleau is off the cap, in fact I think they get a cap bonus of 400+K from the buyout.

no they owe marleau 400k in the 2nd year. they have players to pay tho and they've already shown they are locking up their own to solid deals. OEL Dvorak and Chychrun all signed already. have Perlini and Archibald RFA plus a pretty good UFA crop throughout the league that they could be players in instead of helping a capstrung leaf team.

your right AZ wont wanna add anything to their team. theyre just in the league to take on every bad contract given out not to win or anything.

just ran an ARZ agm and just resigning their own guys leaves about 3.3M in cap space. not enough room for marleau

hossa is on LTIR, so you can still use his 5.275. You should have about 8-10 mil depending on what you sign your players for. Plus cap will go up to about 2-2.5 mil. gives you 10-12.5 mil of room for marleau and a pretty significant FA.
Actually the NHL was perturbed that with the Orpik trade, buyout and signing. They may not allow another one. Don't know why Marleau would even agree to it, the Leafs don't have to agree to resign him. Gotta think Marleau stays a third year with the Leafs as he tries to win his first Cup in his last season.

if they were so perturbed by it they wouldn't have allowed it. They'll have to live with the orpik deal and another others until new CBA which expires after the 21-22 season.

you're right about Hossa forgot about him hidden on the top line. but unless someone takes a paycut there is no way you get to 10M of capspace. Perlini is going to get healthy raise just like Dvorak did. even if you sign the other RFAs for 1-1.5M you get about 8.5 in cap space. that's where they are right now this season. doubt they take on anymore dead capspace.

To quote Dubas... "They can and they will". I think there's some lack of consideration about when things happen with this deal, a cap increase, and who needs to be paid when and how LTIR works, etc.
ARZ is a team with a long standing track record of making this exact type of move. There is no difference to a team that never spends anywhere near the cap (because they can't afford to do so and if they did the teams that are subsidizing their existence would be less than pleased). This is why they are the dumping ground for bad contracts that artificially keeps ARZ from scraping the cap floor every season.
Generous contracts for most players, even resigning someone like Panik with a raise (no chance), Perlini won't be getting Dvorak money given his production he will likely be bridged at a low number.
You'll also note that buying out Marleau provides a cap credit in 20-21 if you use the Buyout Calculator, meaning they will have more than the cap that year to sign Keller and Strome (not that they'll need it since the 6.25M of cap opens up from Marleau being gone + another cap bump + Seattle likely taking a crappy contract off their hands.
But in short, there is no downside to ARZ to make this deal that essentially gives them a 2nd round pick for nothing.
I agree with what Palhal said in that the only real road block is the league trying to block it. However, I feel since they allowed it with Orpik it sets a precedent and they can't change their tune now.If they want to prevent that sort of thing, they'll have to write it into the next CBA.

I did and agm for ARZ at 82.5M salary cap, signed all of their RFAs to contracts between 1.2-1.4M Perlini to 3M and Panik is playing top 6 min so I gave him 3M and that leaves 8.5Mish in cap space. If you don’t think they re-sign Panik then adding a top 6 fwd will cost at least 5M so that brings it down to 6.5Mish left. Not enough to take the Marleau contract.
ARZ is going to want to make a serious run at the playoffs the next couple seasons with the way they’re set up. The young talent will no longer be “prospects” for lack of a better term. They’re in it this season. Next year will be a big year in becoming true contenders and I don’t see how taking 6.25M in dead cap space helps them.
As for comparing the trade to the Orpik trade, COL wanted Grubuaer so WSH made them take Orpik. This trade ARZ doesn’t want anything, TOR does. TOR wants cap space.

You and I have very different views on how ARZ operates so I don't think we'll find common ground. But the team I linked includes the 6.25M from Marleau as a 35+ buyout and there is ample cap for a team that isn't going to compete seriously for at least a season or two and doesn't have the cash to spend. And every team wants 2nd round draft picks, especially when they are essentially free.

They’re not in the basement anymore and they are trending up. This isn’t the ARZ team that took on all the contracts anymore. It’s not about how they operated in the past. It’s about what they’re going to wanna do now and into the near future. Taking on another contract with having Hossa’s contract already doesn’t make sense. It makes sense to you as a leafs fan because it make the leafs a better team. How does this make ARZ better?
