An overpayment by a mile for Jones. Want to give up 4 first rounders for him too? Sure doesn't look like Cup contenders (and least next year) with Froese, Gauthier

Hmmm, take a pill Pal, I think the Seth salary is meant to be a RFA offer sheet that CLB couldn't meet. Interesting idea. Agreed, it's a lot of money but maybe worth it to snag a young defensive talent like Seth who helps to lock down Leafs D. I would prefer Andersen to Elliot but I like that we have addressed a goalie and a taken a solid step on D. I would like to see one more physical stay-at-home D and I would probably look for Laich in the middle on the 4th line with Hyman (a Babcock fav) on the wing and let Froese and the Goat get another year of seasoning in the "A".
Nice work bigleaffan!

A $7M offer sheet would mean giving up a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd. Assuming the Leafs don't have a top 5 pick next year this is likely well worth it for Jones. If you're going to tender an offer sheet you have to overpay and it is very possible Jones becomes a player that is worth a contract of that size.

I have to say, I actually love that signing too, although the Leafs don't want to giving up draft picks if they can get Jones and it doesn't get to the level that they need to give up 4 1st round draft picks. I can sacrifice a 3rd rd draft pick, 1 of our 3 and maybe a top 10 pick for an amazing top defenseman

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the AAV on offer sheets is calculated using a maximum of 5 years, no matter what the term of the actual contract is.

So in this case with Jones, it's $49 million total divided by 5 years, which is $9.8 million per. That's four 1st round picks.

I stand corrected. In this case I think the likelihood of the offer sheet being matched doesn't change if the offer were 5 years $35 million. Columbus has some cap issues in the short term.

OK. I'll say it. Jones isn't 7m good. He isn't Reilly 5m good. He got a lot buzz because he's an American, from Texas, black, father was a NBA player and is physically gifted. Do you know where he was selected in the draft and who who picked ahead of him? Good luck to the Leafs in a couple of years trying to sign Nylander and Matthews if they even become good players before their RFA expires.
LeafsFan. He is not an amazing defenceman.

You are correct. That could end up being very costly to the leafs. Huge price to pay for potential also Stamkos can't sign for 8 years and would get more than 9.5

Ok. I'll say it. Not a big palhal fan. 7 years, 5 years it doesn't matter... 7 million dollars is a contract that a defenceman like Jones will more than likely grow into in a few years and it would be a tough one for columbus to match. I wouldn't have suggested giving away 4 first round picks, if the cost is a first, second and third.. thats pretty cheap for talent like jones on a termed contract. even at 2 firsts, a second and a third that is a deal i would do.
