Description
Personally think if we go for Pietro, maybe swap johnson for kappy and ask for an extra 1m retained for the better player and johnson will be cheaper to keep in the line up, correct me if im wrong, but i could see gardiner taking less money for a full term contract as thats the least of torontos problem is money needed to be given out so if in 8 years when hes 36-37 it wouldnt be an issue vs a 4-5 year deal at 6 - 7 mil he will make more with to in the long run for now

Term for Gardiner is a great idea. It was suggested a while back during an intermission that this type of deal may be what Dubas is leaning towards.

The term for M and M is too short with those high cap hits. They may well end up getting 5 or 6 year deals but at millions less each

The idea of Gardiner for another 8 years makes me sick. The steps he has lost already, I cant see the value making sense. As for Petro, this is sacrificing out future for a win now. Those rarely work, I dont like it and I dont think its smart. Washington Forsberg deal comes to mind.
palhal liked this.

i dont know why people hate on gardiner so much, he hasnt been bad this year whatsoever, also you are comparing martin erat who has a career high of 58 points which is good but not close to elite to petro who put up 54 points as a dman. johnson and kappy are fast and good but the big question is if it is because of the situation they are in. i like them both but you you have to give good assets for good assets back, we may be able to swing another prospect but it all depends on fit.

I don't have a hate for Gardiner, but at age 28 he has peaked. Just can't see the advantage of extending him. Plus that you have shown that the cap doesn't work with him, over the cap and a roster player short.
Pietrangelo, here's another guy that may have peaked, is he going to help the Leafs that much for a year and half. Who knows, the Leafs might be one of few teams he waives his NTC,s it's like the Blues are going to be receiving many offers. Admitting the Blues don't have to trade him.

I neither love nor hate the trade. A prospect, young roster player and a first is the typical asking price. Having them retain and take Zaitsev is nice but may up the asking price.

I read between the lines when Dubas commented on Gardiner. I just don’t see a way he fits on the roster past this year. I think he’s a quality top 4 d-man but i don’t have interest in giving him an 8yr deal. I think if you leave him off and sign a vet UFA at half the price (hainsey type) so play 2nd pair with Dermott...the cap works and you can buy yourself time until more cap space opens up in later years.
