this deal makes no sense from Toronto's side.. they don't need a Caggiula. he's not even in their top 9. They don't need a prospect dman who might work out. and the pick is just another prospect who might work out. Toronto is actually a contender this year (unlike Edmonton) they may not make it all the way, but Kapanen is going to help them quite a bit and won't have to sign for a lot this offseason. They'll need reliable wingers on reasonable deals with their cap crunch coming. Toronto passes with ease.

Bear as it stands right now is further ahead than all of their d prospects, he's the main piece in this deal.

Leafs still keep Kapanen and develop guys like Ozighanov, Liljegren and Sandin.. no point in giving up a guy like Kapanen for an at best bottom pairing dman. Leafs have prospects that would pass Bear quickly

Bear is definitely ahead of any of tornotos currents prospects. Cagguila brings grit something toronto has zero of and will get demolished in playoffs because of it. The draft pick is an asset that can be turned into something of need in the future. Plus theres no way they can resign kapanen if you have any hope of having money to counter a offer sheet for matthews or marner.

1) Liljregen and Sandin could both be ready next season, and if not a cheap veteran on a 1 year, league minimum would be a fit until one of those 2 players are ready mid-season.
2) Kapanen can be re-signed, they can get him at a lower cap hit on a bridge deal because this is his first full season in the league and you don't pay guys long term big money based on 1 season.
3) There aren't going to be any offer sheets, they just don't happen and there's too many teams with their own good RFA's this season that they have to worry about first.
& 4) LOL.. yes the Leafs need some grit (despite Dubas saying they weren't going out to add physicality) .. but if you think that big, bad, Drake Caggiula is the answer to their grit options.. you may need to rethink what you know about hockey.

I'm not saying Kapanen might not be expendable. I'm saying this is an incredibly weak offer that I'm pretty sure wouldn't even be thought of being accepted by Toronto. Kapanen can bring back more than a maybe NHLer, a third liner at best, and a pick. That's not good asset management by Toronto if they took that deal.
