Test for JonesRyan

Created by: jmac490
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 29, 2018
Published: Dec. 29, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I was also curious to see if the Leafs could land Seguin.

So, the Leafs may need to money crunch a bit further on Johnsson/Kapanen to fit an extra roster player, but the team will increase their cap space by 6.25 with Marleau retiring and the team would not need to be cap compliant by the seasons start with Hortons contract expiring. This deal in all likelihood would need to be done with the Leafs 2020 1st rd pick at the beginning of the season after the money clears with Horton on the roster.

Then the team may also have to pay overages for the bonuses that they need to pay. But it would be a tough sell to get Seguin and the cap is close but in all likelihood this deal wouldnt happen.

You win JonesRyan :)

I also think you've overpaid Kapanen and underpaid Marner by at least $1M each each way.. but yes. The Leafs have a potential of $5.4M in bonuses to be rolled over and paid next year against the cap. So I knew Seguin wouldn't be a fit. I honestly wouldn't even take him on this team. Too many off ice issues and with the way the Leafs are run that just wouldn't sit well with them. They're further better off to keep the core they have and add younger, cost efficient players through drafting and development than to go out and pay for a guy like Seguin. They don't need anymore offence. They're right there with Tampa as the 2 best forwards groups in the league. The team needs defence. Seguin doesn't help that at all. Was just trying to point out that you need to think of the future cap with contract extensions and future RFA's before making a deal like you proposed. That's why it was easy to see it wouldn't work. The only guy I see as a potential trade fit for the Leafs long term is either Colton Parayko in St.Louis or Brett Pesce in Carolina. But Parayko has to involve Zaitsev for cap reasons + younger, good, valuable prospects, and Pesce would cost us Kadri. Both risky deals to make. But thanks for reaffirming me that I was correct wink

For anyone asking btw, I never said the Leafs should get Seguin or that this package was fair. I just pointed out the cap implications of it.

I think Marner will take a sizable hometown discount. He loves it in Toronto and he is having a ton of fun with everyone on the team. Hoping Matthew's takes less than 12 as well but it will be a tough one for sure

Are you living under a rock? Reports have came out awhile ago that Marner and his dad have said he's looking for $10M per season... I don't think he gets that. He asks for it to start cause you always ask for more in a negotiation. But realistically, Eichel makes $10M and Draisaitl makes $8.5M so Marner comes in somewhere between them on a 8 year deal. Eichel plays centre so he makes more for that reason. I'd say Marner signs for roughly around $72M over 8 years (or roughly $9M per season) and I'd be pretty satisfied with that

And Nylanders camp started at 8M. I know that parents want the best for their kids and to not be pushed around, but if the choice was purely Marners and not his dads, then he would sign for less.

Sure you can start at 10M (and I'm a huge Marner fan), but having him at 7.5-8.25 would be ideal.

Just sucks that Nylander is getting paid 7M to do next to nothing and Matthews/Marner needing a buttload to stay in Toronto. I'm just hoping that Dubas can work some magic.

As a Marner superfan I believe he can make up to 11M a season but that would jeopardize the team as a whole. So someone has to give to make the cap work. Maybe Kappy gets moved for picks? Or Zaitsev for someone lesser and cheaper?

Nylander asked for $8M and got $7.5M.. the only reason his cap hit is $6.9M is cause he signed late into this season which makes his cap hit higher this season to compensate for a full season at the money he's making now. Then the remainder is $6.9M to even it out. But if he woulda signed before the season started, he'd be at $7.5M cap hit each year, so he didn't really take much less.
I'd love Marner to come in around there too. But realistically, he's a top player in the league and it's smart for him to get his money while he can. $9M is fair. Still puts him in the top percentage of players and is still manageable. I can see Matthews getting north of $12M since the cap is going up, so even that or hopefully $11.5M would be a huge win for the Leafs long term. But their cap situation should lighten up a bit when Marleau comes off the books after next season. Kappy should sign a smaller bridge deal which will help. The big issue I see is in 3 years when Freddy, Rielly and Kadri come up. 1 of them will have to go, probably Kadri and move Nylander to C, sign Freddy to a 3 or 4 year deal around $7-$8M depending on how their goalies in the system develop (Ian Scott and Joesph Woll) and then Rielly I'd say gets the full 8 year deal between $8-$9M with the way he's been playing the past few years.. then the cap gets real tight

I don't know why folks think a "rising cap" of about 3 or 4 m a year is going to help much, ALL 23 players are going to in on the pay increases, so you can't logically say it the cap increase cap is going to sustain the Leafs if their players coming off ELCs and are entitled to big raises. Even with fair raises, sure looks like one of top earners is going to have to traded, if not this summer but soon.

I think you will be very sad if you think that.

I don't think 9 million is unreasonable, however Eichel signed his deal a year early and the cap has gone up since then.

If Marner wanted to sign "because he is having so much fun" he would have already done so.
