Fixing without breaking 2

Initial Creation Date: Jan. 19, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Explanation for signings:

- Matthews gets JT money, plus a 250K add because of the change in the salary cap. I figure he's willing to do this because it's not underpayment, its simply less than he might get on an offer sheet, and I think he would like to stay. He understands the cap problems, and I think he'd be willing to do it. They would have to offer it before FA tho, cuz he won't decline 12M+ offer sheets.

Marner - He might need higher, but if anyone is taking a cut I feel like it's him. He just has that "team first" attitude, and really the cut isn't that big. He would also have to sign before FA, and I could see them signing an extension right after the season ends.

Johnsson - basically the Hyman/Brown contract. Seems fair to me.

Kapanen - This is hard. I think he gets about 1 million more than Brown. He could get more, but I feel like he'd take this deal considering it's only 3 years, and he'll get big money if he plays well.

Jensen - I love the idea of getting a cheap 2/3 RD, especially if we have to move Zaitzev. Similar style replacement for less money, seems ideal to me. Will he sign here, that's a tough call considering he might get less money, but we are a contender.

Muzzin Trade - replaces Gardiner. Simple as that. Adds for the POs 2019, but also gives some longer term support at a cheap hit. resigning him could be hard.

Now, here's the tough part. I gave Rosen the 3LD spot for now. He should be ready, and he's looked good in the AHL. If this doesn't work out, we do have a few other options in Lilly, Borgy, and Sandin, so I'm not overly worried. Muzzin replaces Gardiner as 2LD with Dermott on the right, but Dermott and Jensen "could" switch. I just like the idea of having Reilly with a guy like Jensen who can support him on both sides of the puck, plus adds a right hand shot.

Bracco or even Grundstrom would challenge for a 13th forward spot, but considering the cap tightness there's probably no point leaving them scratched. Injuries will occur, and that will make way for them.
I am aware we are still 300k over, but some small number changes to a signing or two would fix that.

    - Here’s the thing.... Zaitzev may still have value. He’s got some offensive upside, and other than the term on his contract he’s a worthwhile player. That being said, TML can’t afford him, so it’s time to move him and see what we can get.

I have no idea what his return is, but a decent pick might seem fair. Especially if we have to trade a 1st rounder to get Muzzin or someone similar.

    What bonuses?

All the moves from the last ACGM are in here, so IDK what I missed?

Like for real, just tell me and I'll fix it.

You put Horton on ltir in part one. I’ll be honest this defence is horrid, think we would be better with Oz and zaitsev personally. But if you do some quick math and see if the numbers fit with Horton off ltir for your TDL moves than it is cap compliant. Just make sure PB’s get paid.

Even if you wanted to go

    Dermott/Reilly
Ozzy/zaitsev (they were paired like this in khl and did very well)

Everyone has a hate on for zaitsev or possibly just his cap hit but certainly is solid defensively. Personally I think you either go big and move a major piece or you go very small and add security if Lilly isn’t ready.

Like I said, I like Zaitzev and he still has value in my opinion. His cap hit just won't fit no matter what I do here. I like the Oz and Zaitzev idea too.

LTIR for Horton is a guarantee, and the bonus won't matter towards the cap hit IIRC. If it did, every ACGM on here would calculate that and the Leafs would never ever be able to fit within the 83 million.

I highly disagree that this is worse than the old defence, simply because we can actually afford this defence and Muzzin is good. Gardiner alone will make the money paid to Muzzin and Jensen, so take two or take just him. I know which I prefer, more assets win you the cup, not one guy who isn't good enough to carry the team on defence.

I agree with the go-big-or-go-home strategy, and Muzzin is a significant piece IMO. If this isn't the best option, someone like Jensen who is simply a good addition to team probably is at the TDL. I'd be perfectly fine with just adding Jensen and resigning Gardiner, but I don't think it will work for the cap.

Also, Lilly and Sandin are the immediate call-ups for injury, and they will fill in the defence next year when more resignings come up to pose cap trouble. They won't be hurt in their development if they wait one more year, in fact I think they could probably use it because it will give them a few games without just getting thrown into the lineup.

Ltir relief can not be used to pay Performance bonuses. All performance bonuses will roll over from 2019. You need to get him on IR as he is right now in your 2019 part one.

Ohhhhh lmao. I thought the problem was on this one. IDK why you made such a big deal outta that, but ok. Thanks for pointing it out.

Also, I kinda wanna see that Oz-Zaitzev pairing, maybe move Dermott up. Sounds interesting for RN. Maybe just a game or two, based on an injury or something.

Detroit wouldn't be interested him. I know you said any team. I agree Zaitsev still has some value I'm just not sure he has $4.5m of value. He's 27 (around the age most defenseman peak) and he has 5 years left after this season so $4.5m till he is 33.

Agree with all of that, but the Leafs just can't retain. I think he would get a 2nd rounder if they retained, so I thought a 3rd might make sense. If it's not quite right, we could add a prospect like Carcone or something.

It’s not a big deal if it works but it’s a huge deal if it doesn’t. Just have to figure out how much muzzin’s hit is at TDL.

Personally I hate losing the 2019 first, if that pick is Leasson, I might not like your deal. Watched him play in midget here. Think he could be a solid nhlr in the very near future.
