WSH gets its 6th round pick back to compensate for losing two players with no guarantee of re-signing Hutton.

Picks going both ways are conditional on a certain number of minutes played down the stretch and either of the main RFAs resigning with their new team.

You are close here ... replace Jaskin with a D prospect like Fehervary to get it done

The last thing this team needs is another LHD. Hot damn. Both Djoos and Siegenthaler are better than Hutton.

I agree on the LHD comment, wouldn't be my first choice, but sometimes you don't get to dictate who is available (and this was in response to a very specific post/question on another thread). Definitely disagree on your comment regarding Djoos & Siegenthaler...Hutton plays about 6 more minutes per night, 0.07 more PPG, has more than double the points share of both (combined). His even strength Corsi isn't great, I will grant you that, but playing him on a 3rd pairing and allowing him to eat minutes to rest your better players is still a win, in my opinion.

Conditional 2nd round pick more or less covers this, right? If not, VAN is free to re-sign Hutton after this season. Fehervary was a 2nd round pick and Hutton was a 5th round pick, so the conditional 2nd rounder should be sufficient value, in my opinion. If VAN was adamant about Fehervary or a similar-level defensive prospect on an ELC, I would say that player plus Burakovsky with no pick from WSH, and then maybe bump the 6th from VAN up to a 4th...

Even if he's better (I still disagree), is he really so much better it's worth moving our only real trading chip for him? Don't think. The only thing this team needs is a scoring threat on the 3rd line.

Probably a valid point there, regarding the need for depth scoring. I would prioritize that higher, but I still see a need for depth on defense as well. Like I said, this was more as a response to a direct question, if we're strictly talking about whether Ben Hutton should be a trade target, then I agree with you, Caps can pass.

I disagree to the highest of levels, but I'll give you some stats to decide for yourself. Neither Djoos nor Siegenthaler can play any minutes at all. Djoos' stats are compiled from the last two years due to limited usage this season. The first number is the team's record, the other are the goals for and against per game.

Siegenthaler:
15+ minutes: 4-3-0, 3.00 GPG, 3.14 GAPG
14- minutes: 8-4-3, 2.87 GPG, 2.73 GAPG
without him: 15-10-3, 3.82 GPG, 3.29 GAPG

Djoos:
15+ minutes: 12-10-2, 3.42 GPG, 3.58 GAPG
14- minutes: 39-22-6, 3.12 GPG, 2.85 GAPG
without him: 26-11-4, 3.29 GPG, 2.95 GAPG

Hutton:
21+ minutes: 14-9-3, 3.04 GPG, 3.04 GAPG
20- minutes: 8-12-3, 2.52 GPG, 3.04 GAPG
without him: 1-1-0, 4.50 GPG, 4.50 GAPG

The only thing Hutton has going for him is he plays more minutes. But outside of that Djoos and Siegenthaler yield better results.

But it's a whole lot easier to play well in 13-14 minutes than it is to play well in 21+ minutes. And playing 21+ minutes is infinitely more valuable. Also, Siegenthaler and Djoos have played very sheltered minutes and have played in very few games in their career. If you're cool with giving Siegenthaler and Djoos 20+ minutes a night or even 17-19 against top lines, that's cool. It's like comparing a guy like Hagg to Hutton. Djoos lives in the offensive zone compared to Hutton, and plays behind Orlov and Kempny, who are great shutdown guys and take all of the hard minutes. That leaves Djoos with a lot of offensive zone starts and easier competition. Siegenthaler plays behind Niskanen and Carlson who though they play fewer hard minutes than Kempny and Orlov, they both eat a ton of minutes, leaving Siegenthaler with a tiny amount of ice time. By statistical comparison Kulak is better than Weber and Petry. Who would you rather have? By the comparison you showed me Matt Irwin has been "outplaying" Josi, Subban, and Ellis and almost equalled Ekholm. Yannick Weber has outplayed Ellis. Would you rather have Irwin or Subban/Josi/Ellis? Guys who are elite at playing 12-14 minutes a game are - pardon me - worthless. That they are young gives them more value, but Hutton is barely older than Djoos. Siegenthaler has talent but he's not quite going to fit in BMac's 2 year window.
