It starts at ownership. Melnyk has made it clear he doesn't want to spend money on this team "right now" and is currently penny pinching at every opportunity, trying to pay off his debts. Once he gets that sweet expansion draft money, he'll "maybe" start thinking about spending. Until then, Ottawa can enjoy maybe 2-3 years of mediocrity and continue to be the NHL's farm team.

-Players

The only reason that Ottawa is over the cap is because Dorion won't put Gaborik or MacArthur on LTIR because, without them, Ottawa wouldn't be able to reach the cap floor.

Do a little research. That had more to do with people (citizens of Ottawa) not actually getting paid because of a government pay system mess-up.

A city of nearly $1 million can't fill a 17000 seat arena...sorry but the entire city of Ottawa doesn't work for the government.

Did you do research or are you being lazy? ~50% of the entire city works for the government. ~35% of those people had serious pay fluctuations or were straight up not paid at all. Not everyone in Ottawa watches hockey. We have a rather large Soccer community and CFL community as well. All of which are neatly and conveniently located just outside of downtown Ottawa. On that note, it also doesn't help when the rink is located almost 40 minutes from downtown where the majority of the population is driving one way to pay almost 30$-40$ parking.

Before the whole Alfredsson debacle, Ottawa had no issues selling out. It's only when Melnyk started meddling did Ottawa have a severe drop in attendance. Conveniently, right after Melnyk snubbed Alfredsson and got a new liver, stuff started going downhill.

I do agree that Melnyk is the issue and until he sells the team, it is going to be a dumpster-fire where nobody wants to play.

when Melnyk screwed Alffredson people stopped going, only got worse as the idiot kept on screwed the team and players over.

Their arena is almost an hour drive away from downtown which probably deters people from going to games, along with many other reasons
