the point of the benning trade is washington upgrades from brooks orpik on defense while edmonton gets a prospect and a third for benning with salary retained. Edmonton has a log jam of third pairing defenders right now and trading away benning frees up space for one of: jones, bear, persson, or bouchard to play the third pairing RD next year.

I dunno if the Caps want Benning, but I will tell you that Orpik has a full NTC, and there's absolutely zero chance he waives for EDM.
