I don't but as I say there are two options, and it could go either way. Our GM is the guy that traded Ilya Kovalchuck for a bag of pucks and a McDonalds monopoly set

Why would we trade Williams? He's old yes, but we need his veteran leadership

Also, why did you bring Scott darling back up to the NHL? Scott darling would immediately sink our playoff hopes because he is horrible

The hurricanes probably aren't selling that much as we are probably going to make the playoffs. Mac and mrazek are a great goalie tandem and if we are going to trade ferland then we would probably get a better return than just draft picks

According to Bob Nicholson and Keith Gretzky, the Oilers aren’t trading draft picks. They certainly won’t be tossing away a second-round pick for a guy who can walk away at the end of the season. Even if they wanted to make the trade, they don’t have cap space to keep Ferland.

That's the point. Do we want to make the playoffs? We need a long term solution at G and I love Ned but he's up and down. I'm not 100% leaning either way

That's their problem but they need wingers. When Ty Rattie is your best winger you have issues

Ferland is a UFA as of July 1, and Edmonton is 7 points out of the second wildcard spot in the west with only 20 games left. He can’t be a rental, that would make no sense.

Rattie, Rieder, and Petrovich are probably done after the season, Oilers might try to re-sign Chiasson. With Puljujarvi’s future uncertain, Edmonton will need to sign at least two, and likely three, players over the summer. Expiring contracts open only $6.1-million, but both Khaira and Puljujarvi will get a raise in pay, and Chiasson will too, if re-signed. Even if the new GM can negotiate minimal increases for those three, there would likely be only $4.6-million or so left over. That’s not a lot of cap space for Ferland, and so trading for him becomes a huge gamble, unless he agrees to a cap-friendly contact extension first.

You’re not taking into account the cap going up to 4 million dollars and the money that each player is currently making comes off the books too. There’s more then enough space. Also giving Ferland to McDavid would make them such a more dangerous team.

The trade deadline has passed, so Edmonton's new GM might choose to pursue Ferland through the UFA market. At least that will allow the team to hang onto its draft picks, and enter negotiations knowing what cap space it has. That is a far better outcome than moving assets of any kind for a player that may play only 20 meaningless games at the end of this season.

Ferland is supposedly only a signature away from extending, so it would be more then 20 meaningless games

It appears certain that Edmonton has only 20 games left this season; the odds of getting into the playoffs are almost non-existent. Why give up draft picks so that he can play those 20 games? If he is only a signature away from extending, is it not more sensible to sign him on July 1, and give up no draft picks? It seems to me the risks of him extending with Carolina before July first is just as great as the risk that had Edmonton traded for him he would not sign an extension. So, why give up the picks?

He's not reaching free agency, thats the point, so you pay the price to get him
