Moving out a lottery pick

Created by: BeterChiarelli

Description
Assuming Edmonton wins either the #2 or #3 lottery picks, does shipping that pick plus two additional 1sts off to TBL for Brayden Point make any sense? He's not significantly older than whoever Edmonton would select there and is already a top-line NHL talent now, which is something this club desperately needs. Gives Tampa a hell of a replacement for Point plus assets they can use to ship off other dead cap or further upgrade their roster.

By the deadline, the club could opt to bury/flip Gagner and recall Yamamoto. I legitimately think this solves Edmonton's offensive woes, but the back end is quite uncertain.

$18.328M comes off the books this season. I'm anticipating $11.727M of that to go to RFA raises, prospects making the team, and RFA bonuses. If the cap goes up another $2M and the club elects to buyout Koskinen next summer, there's approximately $8M left to find a middle-pairing RHD and 2 goaltenders to split starts until one of Wells, Skinner, Rodrigue, or Hawkey are ready.

I think it's incredibly dangerous to trade away the next 3 years worth of 1sts with that roster..

The only part that scares me is that the 20', 21', and 22' can't be lottery protected because by the onset of this trade, the 2023 pick can't be put into play. Beyond that, there are still legitimate prospects in the AHL and this roster features three players that are going to break the 100-point mark this season. No NHL team has had that luxury since the 95-96' Penguins. I don't think there's a top-6 in the league that compares to what Edmonton could ice here unless Toronto were to stack theirs.

At the very least, this team sets a record for games gone to OT; the option to ice Draisaitl/McDavid/Point in the final minutes and still have a competent player start OT is astounding.

You would be better off drafting Kakko and signing Panarin then trading for Point and signing him to 9.6

Panarin will not be signing in Edmonton unless it's for north of $13M.

Point signing in EDM would be amazing but that trade would be really really bad for EDM in the long term. Despite how good Point is. EDM needs those picks badly.

I know it sounds counter intuitive but the last thing EDM needs right now is more high priced talent....... they need low priced talent while the bad contracts on the team dissipate.

I truly think there is but one path for EDM right now and its to be patient. There is now way to turn this turd pile into gold in the span of a year. So don't waste picks and prospects on slightly less stinky turds.
