Edler - New Contract

Created by: nuxfan
Team: 2019-20 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 26, 2019
Published: Feb. 26, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
2 Year Extension
SEASON CLAUSE CAP HIT S. BONUSES BASE SALARY TOTAL SALARY
2019-20 NMC $7,500,000 $8,000,000 $1,000,000 $9,000,000
2020-21 None $7,500,000 $5,000,000 $1,000,000 $6,000,000

Since Edler declined to waive his NTC at the deadline the Canucks should extend him for two years, so they do not lose him for nothing (especially when you consider that Calgary's offer at the deadline was "mind-blowing"). A two-year extension will allow his contract to expire at the same time as Pettersson and Hughes (if he signs and plays this season) ELCs. He will likely want another NTC which he will definitely use again in the future. However, the Canucks should give him a NMC instead of a NTC for the first year of the extension and nothing in the final year. To compensate for no form of protection in the final year the Canucks should provide Edler a sufficient amount of money (13M in signing bonuses should be enough).

Edit: Don’t see the Canucks protecting Edler in the expansion draft either. Considering that it will happen in June 2021, the Canucks can flip Edler as early as July 2, 2020 or at the deadline in February 2021. If he wants to come back again (after this extension) the Canucks can sign him to a one-year contract as a free agent.

Do you mind giving me your source? Honestly love the term - though that’s a pretty hefty salary for a guy that’s struggled to stay healthy.

This isn't a real extension... just what I think would be fair for both sides... added more to the description... let me know what you think

Cheers

Cool. I really like the explanation, but I feel like in two years we’ll be in the playoffs and not looking to shop rentals. We’re a couple points out now and have yet to see Hughes and Demko make an impact. Not to mention Juolevi’s arrival the following year. I don’t want him to have a full NTC either. I’d rather give him a 20 team NTC and make him submit the list next year. Then the options would be open if Juolevi progresses faster than expected. As for the contract itself, 5.5 with a full NTC, 6 with a NTC becoming a M-NTC, 6.5 with a M-NTC, 7 with a NTC-nothing, 7.5 with M-NTC to nothing, and 8 with no clause are my projections. I’d bet on the 6 million option. A NMC is interchangeable with a NTC in that chart.

I'd be pissed as Canuck executive that Edler to not waive his NTC. He could have waived, helped the Canucks get an asset and then come back and signed as a Canuck. Canucks have the decision, can they find better value signing another player than signing Edler. Who else would pay him 7m or more. Gee, 6m seems high as any contending just might not have that cap. There are teams that want to shed cap, maybe the Canucks can fill that with "cap dumps" and I'm not talking bad players and get a sweetener too. Maybe it's time to move from Edler.

I’d be really surprised if Benning ups the salary for a player that didn’t waive to help the team, can’t stay healthy to be reliable, and is inconsistant in the offensive zone. I’m thinking 5mil*2 m-NTC ON FIRST YEAR ONLY, or 12mil/3 and no protection at all. Honestly, the canucks are better off making a play for Gardiner or Myers, both of whom are more durable, are younger and have more upside... even with Gardiners defensive worts.

In reality, if he cared about the team and staying in Vancouver, then improving the canucks going forward by waiving and resigning would have earned legend status in the minds of most canucks fans. Not to mention, he probably could have gotten a sweetheart deal to finish out his career here too!
