Description
Notes:

I'm probably a little high on Marner's contract AAV, if you think I'm low then you probably have to see what similar (and better) wingers have signed for over the last year.

This is the type of trade I think the Leafs would need to make to get out from under the Zaitsev contract (taking back a similar money deal that they can buyout) Russell has a big buyout hit in 2020 (nearly 3.5M ) but a very low 917K buyout number in the other 3 years including 2019 when the Leafs really need cap space because of the final year of the Marleau contract.

I chose Edmonton for this type of deal because of 2 reasons. They were reported to have tried very very hard to add Connor Brown at the deadline but it didn't work out. If Edmonton were to ask for a mid round pick to be added to this trade as a sweetener I don't think it would be a deal break so add a pick or C level prospect to the trade if you think Brown is too light a return to take on Zaitsev (the way they were reported to be after him I don't think it is but
you may)

There are other options in the NHL however to do a deal similar to this but this is the sort of deal the Leafs would have to look at.

I went for a 2 year bridge with Kapanen to keep his AAV down considerably could also see it being a 1 year deal.

Went longer on (5 years) on Johnsson to buy up 2 UFA years but they could easily sign him to a 1 or 2 year bridge as well to give themselves more breathing room. I maybe up to 500k too low on AAV with Johnsson but I think this will be the general range for his AAV on a 5 year deal.

Pick whatever cheap UFA or international free agent you want to fill in around the edges on D.

I went with the low end of what's been reported to be the expected cap ceiling for next season (83-85M)

I'm certain to be roasted for this AGM post.

Gee I hope the Leafs aren't going with this roster. 20 man roster, Holl a regular, little cap. Giving away two NHLers for nothing Zaitsev and Brown.

This is unfinished. It wasn't meant to be a set roster but just to show how they could fit everyone in.
Give Johnsson a 2 year bridge or go to Arbitration with him to free up another $1.5-2M in cap space, like I said this is likely on the high end of what Marner would receive and on the low end of the expected cap ceiling. You can bet that Brown isn't going to be on the team next year cause they won't want to put 2.1M on the 4th line and they'll need to move money to hang on to Kapanen and Johnsson. its a 1 year squeeze because of the Marleau contract.

If it's big money that has to be moved if Marleau remains a Leaf. I don't know why so many reluctant are trade the a big money contract like Nylander or Kadri. Picking around the edges with guys like Brown doesn't do it. And hoping Kapaen and Johnsson take below market value......that's a hope.

This is completely backwards. The edges are exactly where you cut, not with your best players. If you can get by with moving just Brown (who is unlikely to see anything more than 4th line minutes) that's what you do. In what world is 3.75M for a guy who at most by season's end will have 84 games played and who is unlikely to hit 50 points below market value? Like I said go to arbitration with Johnsson and you'll probably keep his salary around $2M for a season. As for Kapanen 2.8M on a 1 or 2 year deal is pretty close if not then use one them to add on D.

I think you proved my point. You're no where near cap compliant even after getting rid of Zaitsev and Brown. Bigger pieces have to go. The RFA market is really unpredictable thanks to the Leafs. Nylander after two 20 goal 40 assists seasons gets 7m a year. Kapanen with similar number projected for this season more goals fewer assists, what is his value.?

In a year where offense has spiked league wide and with nowhere near the track record or ceiling that Nylander had at the time of his negotiations? Considerably lower if he wants to go long term.
