You're completely right. I think there's some teams that would take Russell in exchange for a pick but it won't be Carolina.

Doubt it. He's overpaid and has NMC. No huge market for players like that.

There are tons of players who are overpaid by 1-1.5 (as Russell is) who get traded, and tons of players who waive. I really don't think it would be an issue to get rid of him, but whatever. Oil can add a pick to make it happen.

Not really. The only teams who'd take that $4M contract are teams that have money, and most likely are in the bottom of the standings as well as on the no-trade list of his.

If EDM doesn't retain at least $1M+, I'd say he isn't going anywhere. The main point still holds - specifically, he's overpaid 3rd pair D and the market for the likes of him is not that common.
