Just want your opinion. Don't you think it would be better to trade Nylander for Pesce rather than Kapanen? purely for cap savings. Also I'd almost make an argument Kapanen is the better player.

IMO I never understood why CAR fans don't seem to like the concept of this trade. It's objectively pretty fair whether it be Nylander or Kap: Tor gets big defensive zone help, and Car gets a filthy scorer on the wing for many years to come. Both guys very young.

CAR also has Adam Fox on the way eventually, I think this would force a trade later on for possibly less value.

Why would anyone make a trade for Kapanen or Johnsson in the offseason when they could just offer sheet them since Toronto is in a cap bind. It would only cost Carolina a 2nd to offer sheet Kapanen for 3.8M and Toronto wouldn't be able to match it.

At 3.8 Toronto can't match, not if they're signing Johnsson at least. They would have to get rid of Brown, Hyman, Zaitsev with no returning cap and still they wouldn't have enough to fill out the rest of their roster.

IMO Nylander is a much better player. I think from what we've seen of Kapy playing with Matthews, he is very good, but Nylander is much better at gaining the zone and keeping the cycle going for Matthews. The one area I would miss Kapanen is on the PK, but I think that you can essentially play anyone on the PK as long as they can skate and buy into the system.

Easy match. just trade someone else. losing Kap for a 2nd is insane. if the offer was higher and comp was a 1st then maybe. So many agm teams have kap signed at 4 or more anyways on TML. This isn't gonna be enough.

This deal could be made before July 1st so offer sheets would not yet be in play, and if you wait till July 1st there's no guarantee that Kapanen will even accept the offer sheet or that another team may offer a competing offer sheet.

Other GMs aren't there to help Toronto, they know that they're in trouble cap wise and the only player they could really trade to make cap room would be Nylander and that would be at a huge discount to the other team because they aren't going to make it easy on Toronto. Leafs fans need to get read to lose one of Johnsson or Kapanen for a dinky offer sheet.

I respectfully disagree dzdad96. My opinion is that Nylander will be getting 80 plus points easily next year.

In no way shape or form is Dubas scared of an offer sheet from any team. I’m quite certain he’s aware of the situation. The leafs can exceed the cap in the offseason in order to match the offer sheet, retain control of the player and auction off players for fair value to teams wanting them. Im not saying other teams don’t know the leafs have a problem I’m just saying kap Nylander Johnson etc are going to be lost for a simple draft pick. Just a realistic point. I agree in moving kap in a deal for pesce I think that actually helps both teams.

Funny thing about offer sheets and the Cap, the Leafs can match any OS and place themselves over the Cap during the summer and even into the first few weeks of the season, the Cap hit projections can be adjusted during the season, without penalty.

Nylander isn't playing for the Marlies next season, so he isn't getting 80+ points. In the NHL will top out at 70 points, unless he's traded to another team who'll use him as 1st line talent, not 3rd line.

He's being used with Matthews right now, and both players are benefiting from it.

No reason that can't continue next year.

Are you hinting at a Kadri trade? Lol
