Can't the Wings just wait a year and sign Trouba as a UFA? There is still the danger that the Jets would match that offer...which is the last thing Trouba wants, so I don't think he signs an offer sheet.

The Jets are going to be pinched hard for cap and if they sign Trouba I am sure it would be more than 1 year regardless. So Over pay a little so that if they do match other RFAs are exposed. With the recent success of the jets, his increased role and a nice big contract I think he signs.

Yea me neither I would be ok if they didn't sign any ufa d, but he would be an upgrade to their current blue line. I believe that Hronek and Cholowski are going to be legit top 4 d men. So Gardiner is just an immediate boast that would get the team back on track sooner, I almost said Myers but he is just so injury prone.

Trouba has declined long term offers from Jets before. He 99% want to leave the Winnipeg and become a UFA in summer of 2020. So Jets have to guarantee at least a one year contract at 5.5m to retain his rights for a year. Jets have the decision to make keep him for a year and he helps for a one year Cup run, or trade him and get some assets. But likely his value in a trade isn't that great as he is just a one year rental. Watching Gardiner over the years...I wouldn't sign him long term.
