2 year fix part 1

Created by: RWellington
Team: 2019-20 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 8, 2019
Published: Apr. 11, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
AGM is Year 1 of a 2 part plan

Short Term Plan: make the playoffs by improving the overall balance of the roster (Add 2-3 top 6 forwards, 1 RHD & 1 backup goalie)
EDM will need to make a few UFA signings however nothing big, while also trading away some cap hits that are less than desirable. This also means Lucic remains an Oiler 1 more season, he is untradeable and virtually buyout proof.

Long Term Plan: introduce younger talent to the roster while shifting older cap space out. Contracts should be structured so no two major players need resigning in the same off season.
EDM will likely wait to buyout Lucic until the 2020/2021 offseason which may result in another compliance buyout period occuring. The CBA opt out may bring about another opportunity to buyout players with zero against the cap (this will be shown buy Lucic being placed on LTIR in year 2)

EDM lands the 8OV pick in the 2019 Entry draft select Peyton Krebs (LW)

2019 Offseason moves:
Sign Marcus Johansson $3.75M
Sign Brett Connolly $4M
Trade Kris Russell with retained salary $1M for Conditional 2020 4th round pick (STL has Del Zotto & Gunnarsson coming off the cap / Russells 10 team trade list will be composed of Western Conference teams)
Trade Manning with retained salary $1.25M max if required to OTT / anybody for as little as nothing in return

2019 in season moves or 2020 TDL moves:
Kyle Brodziak claimed off waivers
Trade Andrej Sekera with retained salary $2M to MTL (Trade assumes MTL still has a weak point on LHD & Sekera has shown an ability to play & is healthy / otherwise EDM places him on LTIR)

look at Chiasson's numbers... worth at least 2.5-3 mil. He will def be a free agent

There's was an excellent analysis at theathletic.com, here: https://theathletic.com/870613/2019/03/15/willis-analyzing-how-much-the-oilers-should-be-willing-to-spend-on-pending-free-agent-alex-chiasson/

The conclusion was this: "Nevertheless, it’s clear that Chiasson is getting a raise. Given his age and history, he can’t really expect to cash-in; Patrick Maroon had to settle for one year at $1.75 million last summer and he’d done more scoring over a longer period of time than Chiasson.

The Oilers should be able to accommodate him. Two years isn’t much of a risk, and given his power play scoring, they could probably safely go as high as a $1.5-million AAV on that term. If they’re willing to take the risk of burying a bit of money, they could probably even tack on a third year at the current league-minimum rate, for three seasons at a $1.23-million AAV."

if he's looking for that much, he'll be looking elsewhere. His career high was 13 before this year. He went on a ridiculous run early before settling in at his usual 12 goal pace. He's a 28 year old coming off 2 or 3 PTOs in a row. If edmonton offers him $1.5M on 2 year deal, he should take it. Its not Chia handing out the contracts anymore...
