Description
Stoodis. Assuming we can't send Marleau to Robidas Island and he doesn't retire. Outstanding person, unfortunately he is no longer a useful NHLer. Grind Johnsson and Kapanen for low cost one year deals (push the issue down the road). I like Nylander, and I feel like we would be selling low on him, but someone has to go for help on D unfortunately, and he is the largest salary. When Marleau retires after this season we have money to properly resign Johnsson or Kapanen, and hopefully Muzzin for 2020-21. Depth is thin, but play the top three lines an appropriate amount, and the top 2 D pairs, and all will be good. Practised all the Dmen on the right side during the summer and pick one of them to make it work.

Seems impractical that Johnsson and Kapanen risk their long time financial security just because of Marleau, (and Matthews and Nylander) are overpaid. Puny offers like that scream offer sheet by other teams.

I agree, that would be my main criticism of my own plan. Definitely prone to offer sheets, so it may not even work. Having read some of the other armchair GMs now I like the plan of staying thin on defense for this year and getting Kappy and Johnsson on 2 or 3 year deals, then fix the defense next summer when Marleau's contract is gone

Well, the Leafs still have to get rid of cap...maybe Nylander and they still would be thin on defence. Actually I don't think they were thin this year but without Gardiner and Hainsey, they will be next year. It's nice to think the Leaf will have cap space about Marleau leaves, but then Dermot and others get more money. Cost efficient Sandin and Liljegren can't be Leafs soon enough....if they are NHL good.

Gotta jump in here... hainsey could be replaced with an old comfortable sweater. He played well for a corpse. I woyluldn’t mind having him back in a lesser role with a new coach. Personally I think ozhiganov will give a better performance than hainsey next year. Gardiner was nothing special. Nothing horrible so I guess that’s a plus.

Duszak and hollowell have tripled our pool of good rhd prospects. No need to move nylander if we don’t have to. The only raise of significance is the Dermott one. If he progresses like he did this year that will tie up about 2m extra. Should leave plenty for upgrades and adjustments.

Man.. you've been throwing out some gems for oneliners lately smile

I agree.. we have a good pool of rhd prospect depth. Hopefully a couple pan out.. we'll need it, I think

Other than that, I think Bracco is up at the same time as Dermott. That could mean something, or nothing at all. I hope it means something, actually

Did you hear Babcock after the series. Saying Gardiner was injured and therefore not effective. But the he couldn't play anyone else, because they weren't a good as an injured Gardiner.
So he threw Ozzie, Holl, Rosen and Dubas under the bus for the failings of the players on the ice and his coaching.

I wonder if Ozzy will want to return with Babcock as coach. Will any Russians want to sign a UFAs? I agree with you I would like to Hainsey back, but geez Ozzie, Rosen or whoever gotta get NHL minutes to see if they are good enough. But your "new coach" theory might solve a lot of the Leaf problems.

If they had those contracts presented to them both player should fire their agents and wait for an offer sheet

I forget the exact figure...by there was a report that Johnsson turned down 2.5 X 3 years earlier in the year.
