Avs On The Clock

Created by: coga16
Team: 2019-20 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 29, 2019
Published: Apr. 29, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ave pieces are looking finally in place, and starting next year their "window" to win starts. This playoffs show that they are not too far away so an offseason of some Key moves and then watching the rest of the kids grow, should be a fun 4-5 years for this core.

1. Resign Tyson Barrie....hes playing like a legit top pairing complete Dman in this league, his game has taken the next step consistently these past 3-4 months.

2. Draft Turcotte at 4 OA if available, if not go with Byram or Boldy. Realistically none of them will be on the roster to start next year, but for the fun of this roster. Turcotte is the real deal and makes this team

3. Big game UFA hunting, they have the cap space to land Panarin or Skinner, if not Hayes or Ferland as the other options as fall back plans

4. Small depth trade tweeks. There are some good serviceable depth guys on this team but with the next wave of youth coming, have to start to opening up a little more roster spots. Soderberg and Barberio if needed are the most likely candidates

I would rather have soderberg than kerfoot 10 out of 10 times.. kerfoot doesnt kill penalties and lost his spot on the top pp, if they didnt need to spread out mack and ranta than he'd be on the 4th line with jost

Hes also not worth 3+mill let alone over 4

Kerfoot has back to back 40+ point seasons. Hes going to get around 4m. Tuch signed his 4.75m extension after a 37 point season. He will be Kerfoot comparable when it comes to a new contract. Soderberg will be 34 next season...you would rather have 1 year of a 34 year old guy over a new contract of 24 year guy?

He is...but I said just for fun for this roster Turcotte is the real deal and makes the team. Don't think he burns Wisconsin but he can always signs an ELC after being drafted and say screw it Im going pro

Team Explaination - nailed it
Contracts signings - nailed it (although id lean towards Skinner than Panarin first based on cap hit value but we are splitting hairs here)
Personally I think if Turcotte doesnt come next year (as he is commited to the NCAA right now) I think the Avs keep Soda at #2C.

Using the players youve given me above; id construct the F lines accordingly:

Panarin-MacKinnon-Rantanen - no change
Landeskog-Turcotte/Soderberg- Kerfoot - no change but keep Soda if Turcotte goes NCAA
Nieto-Jost-Compher - Nieto up; Kaut down
Calvert-Kamenev-Kaut - Kaut gets the "Jost" treatment. Show me what you got at 4th line and earn your spot at line 3 (ie. replace Neito).

D pairings Ive got as:
Girard-Johson
Zadorov-Barrie
Cole-Makar
happy i think these pairs are very balanced with 1 experienced/physical guy paired with 1 puck moving/offense guy

Fair enough, despite the Turcotte Söderberg slot in slot out this is 95% what avs roster could be when it comes to prime time for this core.

I love the girard makar pair last night. Started off slow but by the end of the game they were so fun to watch and the fact they as a pair saw the ice in the closing minutes protecting a lead In the playoffs. That pair is the future and I think it’s coming ahead of schedule

Avs own pick I hope they take Knight, get that goalie of the future to mature while that core does it thing

Makar with Girard in the offensive zone is very exciting hockey for sure.

Heres a crazy idea for you:
I am not opposed to the Avs drafting Knight, but, I think theres a chance he could slip out of the first round. IF he does slip out of the first round, i think the Avs could package their second round pick (#47) with their OTT 3rd round pick (#63) and move up into the (#32-37 range) and pickup Knight. Thoughts?

Target knight is the end goal and however the avs do it, would be a big win. Plus they will be picking 28 once they beat the sharks. Perfect for knight

Overall I agree with most signings and think this is a pretty realistic outlook for the Avs but I would make a few minor changes

1. This has already been mentioned but keep Soderberg and swap him with Turcotte for 2C

2. I don't think Kaut will make the NHL next year. I would rather keep him in the AHL for another season so he can improve more and have Greer move into a full time 4th line role

3. I would sign Andrighetto to a 1 year deal to be the 13th forward and to fill Kaut's roster spot. The season after next he can walk as a free agent and hopefully Kaut will be more NHL ready

4. I think Kerfoot gets a bit less than 4M but thats a very minor detail so I'll just forget about it

Also as a plan B if Panarin doesn't sign then Skinner would be great also. If this happens then the Avs could also likely afford another depth forward (I have my eye on Donskoi)

If I was to re sign any forward out of the non returning bunch I would go with Wilson over ghetto and bourque. I feel like Hayes is second on their wish list. I would like ferland as a ufa target if they can’t get breadman.

Landy mack jost/kerfoot
Jost/kerfoot Hayes rants
Wilson Söderberg Compher
Nieto kam Calvert

Just as an example if they don’t get bread and kaut isn’t ready for nhl duties, or you can look at another 3rd line ufa winger or Greer to play around with bottom 6 over Wilson

I would rather have soderberg for 1 yr than kerfoot for 3 years at the same price yes... dont know if you remember or are watching them play but soderberg was instrumental in getting them in the playoffs, kerfoot has been an after thought.. he cant even be successful on his own line. Unlike sodapop

I think the wish list goes Panarin, Skinner, Hayes, Ferland in that order. Don't see Ghetto coming back, he's not even playing over Bourque rn. Kaut may not make the NHL team out of camp but he should be on the team by the end of the year, Bowers might be too.

Panarin wont sign in Colorado, wants the big city glamor. Absolutely delusional if you seriously think he will sign in Colorado
