Description
The rebuild continues with Yzerman. But just like with Holland, this isn't a race but a marathon. That being said, I made some simple but effective moves here that would help us immediately. I'm not buying out just for the sake of buying out. These actually make sense. Ericsson doesn't appear to have much trade value and we have too many young players waiting in line. As for Daley, I think he does have some value. However, he seems like a deadline acquisition and I don't feel it's worth him taking up a roster spot just to get a 4th-6th round pick. While researching Nielsen's contract I think it makes the most sense to try to trade him after this season, maybe at this deadline. The last 2 years on his contract his salary drops down to 2.5 and then 1.5. He will have a 10 team no trade list that kicked in this past season. Nevertheless, that's down the road. I'd like to see Wit re-signed. He's a low risk signing and can be moved up and down the roster as well as play forward or defense when needed. If Kronwall does indeed decide to retire I'd be ok with keeping Daley OR Ericsson. When creating the D pairings I was trying my best to maintain a veteran and young player tandem. The last move with Callahan is a bit of a stretch but still a possibility with the cap space we will have. He only has one year left, Tampa is looking to shed salary, and he will end up somewhere so why not take advantage. It's possible we take on his deal and don't buy him out but I feel that is less likely. Let me know if you think these moves make sense. What would you add or take away?

If Yzerman doesn't plan to use the gained cap space, it makes a lot more sense to keep those guys around either for their duration of their contracts or at least for another year to shave the long-term buyout cost down by another year

All of these guys are on expiring deals thus the buyout term would only be 2 years for each of them.

Personally I don't see the point in buying guys out with only one season left, injuries are guaranteed to happen so why not just keep them and ride out their contracts. If Kronwall retires he's gone and it's a certainty that one of or more likely both Daley and Green will be hurt at some point during the season so some depth will be needed plus the following summer is when the Wings have many RFA'S to sign so why have that dead space occupied by a buyout when you might need it.

Also it's not good to throw young players especially young D to the wolves, having some vets around isn't the worst thing.
I know it was mentioned that the late round picks they might fetch at the TDL aren't worth keeping them around for but wasn't Ericsson the last guy picked when he was drafted? Detroit is due to regain their status as Kings of finding diamonds in the rough late in draft, some extra picks might come in handy.. Lol

Extending these buyouts of 1 year contracts to 2 years will put pressure in resigning AA, Mantha, and Bert while also wanting to be a player in FA. Daley has trade value (4th-5th round), and Ericsson could be buried (if he’s healthy, he could fail his physical too).

The Wings will also need another F, so if the Callahan trade goes down, he could play on the 3rd/4th line for 1 year. Kuffner is guaranteed to be in GR next year, and there is no one on the bench for 13th forward. While Wit could play both if resigned, you usually want another guy on the bench.

If the Lightning need to cut cap, help them really cut cap: By Taking Callahan in exchange for them trading you Yanni Gourde. Maybe you send back a 3rd or prospect to them to even it out, but at least you get an established player to help sell tickets. I think I did a search for Bruins games a year or two ago and somehow ended up looking at the prices to an away game that was in Detroit by accident and they had a lot more tickets for way more reasonable prices than the Bruins offer at the TD Garden. That made me think they have problems selling out and getting a skilled player like Gourde could make the team better which should make ticket sales go up. That's what I would shoot for if I was making a trade with TB.
