Nah. Leafs pass. Only useable piece is Schultz. ZAR might make the team but he's Leafs have guys in the minors who are better than him. Jarry would be interesting, but Dubas still believes in Sparks fight now. Simon is a scrub. 2nd round pick is meh. Leafs can get better return for Kadri and Kapanen separately than this.

Counter idea though, if you're interested in Kapanen:

Pittsburgh Penguins
Kasperi Kapanen
Nikita Zaitsev
Toronto 2020 3rd round pick

Toronto Maple Leafs
Justin Schultz (agrees to extension as part of deal)
Zach Aston-Reese OR Tristan Jarry

LMAO. Simon isn't a scrub. He's one of the best defensive wingers in the league.

As for your proposal, it's stupid, the Penguins already have enough cap locked up in trash contracts like Johnson and Gudbranson, there's no need for them to give up a good amount of value and not get the adequate amount back

I agree and disagree. I personal feel that Simon isn’t very good. I honestly don’t think he’s good enough to make the leafs roster. He is a 4th line player/ ahl guy. When I think of the best defensive forwards .....guys like stone come to mind not him. I honestly wouldn’t put him in the top 200 players in the nhl.

I agree that the penguins can’t afford to ship Schultz positive value cap for zait negative cap. Shultz IMO would easily be the 2nd best defenseman on the leafs but idk how much a team is willing to pay for 1 year of Schultz knowing he’s going to get a sizable pay raise

Simon is the ideal 3rd line checking forward, he's better than a 4th line/AHL guy. He had one of the best defensive seasons in the NHL by many metrics. He would be perfect for the Leafs 3rd line, or even for their top line now that Hyman is out.

He’s averaging slightly over 1 hit per game. He had 33 take away a and 33 giveaways making him even in turnover ratio. Far from the best defensive numbers in the nhl. It’s actually laughable you think that. 3rd line for Toronto? Marner Nylander Mar Kap AJ would all play over him. Hyman once he’s healthy. Not to mention the ahl guys who are way better. How are you a checking forward averaging 1 hit a game? Seriously ?He had 28 points which is good but I assume he played and scored most of those w Crosby or Malkin
