From Sakic's recent press conference, it sounds like they'll try to resign him and are in no rush to trade him. I guess it depends on what happens July 1st. If the Avs miss out on a top 6 forward then they might pull the trigger on a Barrie trade this summer.

I listened to that too and his answer made me a bit nervous. He was almost as anxious as the question about Varlamov.

Since multiple people commented on the trade about Barrie:

This comment is correct, he really was a massive part of the reason we made it to the playoffs. Unfortunately, he has 1 yr remaining on his contract and is going to be looking for a big raise. With Girard a year older and ready for 20 minutes a night and Makar looking like an absolute stud, the simple fact is paying Barrie what he is worth is probably not a good idea for the team. Unless they can sign him for a team friendly deal (very unlikely), he will simply cost too much when we have cheap replacements ready to take over his role. Meanwhile, we desperately need two top-6 forwards, and Kadri's deal is very cheap for what he brings, while being literally the exact type of player we need, and young enough too. We bring Zaitsev along with the deal to free up space for Toronto to re-sign Barrie, and get a different type of defenseman back, something we actually don't have ready in the system. Zaitsev's contract is a little long/high so I think the leafs will be happy to get rid of it, but I think he fits our D nicely going forward especially as EJ ages and young guys come up.

I donno, i feel like neither of these guys are what we are looking for. We need a little bit more physicality on the bottom 2 lines, a little grit and while kadri may have some of that, those two are not worth barrie. We are moving into a time where we can again be a cup contender and making this trades moves us back a step. Our top 4 with keeping barrie looks unreal. I think the fact that mack loves barrie comes into play as well, happy mack happy life.
