You said danault is a 2nd line center then put him behind toews and strome.. That's third line bud.
Yes he had a good year playing minutes he wouldn't see and getting opportunities he wouldn't get on a good team. You can't make trades based on a players value to the team he's on. You have to make trades based on the value he'd have on your team. If he costs Beaudin you just hang up the phone and move on.
Dude...just because someone plays on the 3rd line doesn't mean they're a 3rd liner. Center depth is one of the most important things for cup contending teams to have. Look at any of the last few cup winners: Backstrom/Kuznetsov/Eller, Crosby/Malkin/Bonino, Kopitar/Carter/Richards, even we had it with Toews/Richards/Vermette in 2015. Just think for a moment what having Toews/Strome/Danault would mean for the team. We could roll 3 dominant lines every game, Toews/Kane on 1, Cat/Strome on 2, and Saad/Danault on 3 with the rest of the forwards filled in from there. That kind of depth is championship caliber, if you find the right wingers to flank those lines. Maybe he wouldn't be getting the 2nd line minutes that he was getting in Montreal, but he'd still get the PK minutes, be playing with at least one top six winger in Saad, and even if he produced 40 points he would be worth the price.
Now lets think about the defenseman situation. By 2020-21, the defensemen we will have under contract are: Keith, Seabrook, Murphy, Jokiharju, Dahlstrom, Boqvist, Beaudin, Krys, Carlsson, Gilbert. The last 3 would almost assuredly be in Rockford, but we can begin to fill in the 7 open defensemen slots.
Keith and Jokiharju are all but locks for the top 6. It's unlikely for Seabs to be traded soon, so he will either be playing bottom pairing or depth. Boqvist should make the team by 20-21. That's four spots gone. Then, say they draft Byram, which I believe they absolutely should. He would also be ready by 20-21. That leaves two spots for: Murphy, Beaudin, Mitchell, Dahlstrom, Koekkoek, Forsling. You might say 'just trade Murphy and put the two rookies in'. Any team with three, let alone FOUR rookie defensemen in its starting lineup won't go very far, so Beaudin and Mitchell would not be making the team together. So, under this scenario the defense would look something like this:
Keith - Boqvist
Byram - Jokiharju
??? - Murphy
Seabrook
That question mark can be filled by one of Beaudin and Mitchell. Given that Mitchell will be more NHL ready coming out of college, and that Beaudin has more trade value, it seems to be in our best interest to convert him, as part of our defensive prospect surplus, into productive forward help. I'm not saying that it has to be Danault. I just proposed a trade on here that had us giving Beaudin for Jason Robertson. But either way, assuming our prospects continue to develop into NHL caliber player, and especially if they draft Byram, something has to give with the defensive backlog. To say that we should 'hang up' if GM's ask for one of our defensive prospects is short minded and bad for this team.
