The offer sheet isn’t just a chance to get a player it’s a weapon to use against your opposing GM who’s team is against the cap in order to weaken them or pry other players loose. Analytics are now now driving the game and the old school GM’s that won’t use it are going the way of Brian Burke being talking blow hards on TV.

That was my point of including Fedorov’s offer sheet—it was a weapon even back then by the Canes owner against his minor hockey league rival (Detroit’s owner). Now GM not owners are using it. They know it will morph during the next CBA, but the smart ones will take advantage of it the next couple years until it does.

That weapon is like a bomb strapped to your chest. If you use it, sure you hurt the other team, but you hurt yourself just as much. There is a reason they never happen.

Not every team is against the cap (does Phoenix’s GM care if it can get a player to a non traditional market? Do the other non-traditional markets care either? nope.) and GM’s aren’t going to have 20 years with any one team anymore. It will be used in the near future. Especially when the team is the Leafs.

Analytics is now driving the front office the way it did in baseball post moneyball.

Funny you bring up moneyball since all offersheets do is inflate salaries. GM's plan on being in the league within the next five years at least, if you do something stupid that inflates salarie, it affects you even if you move to another team. You also have to remember that these GM's have to work together, and would rather come to an amicable agreement than have an adversarial stand-off.

Disagree on many levels. Offer sheets don’t inflate salaries in general, UFA does. Not all RFA’s will receive offer sheets—only those on teams against the cap or a known self imposed ceiling. Besides the salary cap is much more conducive to salary spikes than offer sheets. For example a cap increases 10% would increase salaries more than one team going after Point.

GM’s lifespan has shrunk and will continue to do so as their analytic departments increase. Ken Holland was basically run out of town in Detroit over his loyalty vs analytics on veteran contracts. The game will change from being paid for what you did in the past (the old way of doing things) to being paid for what you are projected to do in the future. Hint it’s not the GM doing these extrapolation. They won’t have the power they once did-which is why you see so many on TV these days. That will only increase going forward.
