If Washington had cap space. I'd like that trade.

I think Avs would have to retain 1m to make it work for him to join any legit contender, based on this roster, this could do t hat

Adding Marc Staal is borderline one of the worst things the Avs could do. At any cost

I kicked around the idea of retaining salary on the Iggy deal and as mentioned you could conceivably do that here w/o trouble.

And I disagree on Staal. I think on the 3rd pairing he'd be fine (at a cheaper rate like I put here), but you could always undo that deal & the Liles deal to go after a UFA. Anything to get Holden off the roster. I don't mind him, but if he's there I worry about Roy's penchant for playing him 22 min/game for no apparent reason.

Staal is only getting older and worse, with significant declines each season. He's actually a worse possession player than Nick Holden. So why get him at even your reduced $3M to play on the third pair? Those guys are a dime a dozen on cheap cheap replaceable contracts every year (or coming up in the system like Bigras and Zadorov for dirt cheap). Instead you're locking yourself in to someone bad and expensive
