Trading for Zs

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2019-20 Anaheim Ducks
Initial Creation Date: May 29, 2019
Published: May 29, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With Peyton Krebs and Trevor Zegras still on the board when Anaheim picks, Minnesota pulls the trigger and moves up and Jason Zucker gets to surf all year. The Ducks still get to pick the best right-handed defenseman in the draft.

It is fashionable among half the Toronto fan base to savage Nikita Zaitsev for his perceived shortcomings, but at penalty killing in particular he would greatly solidify the currently woeful right side of the Ducks' defense.

Elsewhere in the system, Isac Lundestrom and Kiefer Sherwood, among others, can be expected to have futures in the NHL. And keep an eye out for Benoit-Olivier Groulx.

Don't see MIN moving Zucker just to get 3 spots higher in the draft that's not so deep

If you think that the Ducks would move back three slots AND give up pick #39 for Zucker, you've been ingesting recreational pharmaceuticals

That runs counter to many discussions I've had with experienced Minnesota fans

First of all, you busted me!

Second, Zucker to move up 3 spots is ridiculous...asking for the second isn’t THAT far fetched. Maybe the Wild throw in a 3rd or 4th to even things out?

Okay, I've looked it over, and I'm persuaded that you aren't getting enough. Would Sprong or Sherwood be sufficient? Let's ask @TanSor too

I've cooled off a bit on the need to move up in the draft, there will be a very good player available at 12 (I'm hoping dearly for Newhook as I really like him). For me it all depends on who we can get at 9. If Zegras or Caufield are still there, then Id be fine trading Zucker to move up and take them and gain either a 2nd or a middle 6 RW. If it's just trading Zucker to move up 3 spots then it's not worth it to me. If neither of those two are there, then I'm not a fan. That's just my personal opinion, as I HIGHLY covet Zegras and Caulfield.

I'm convinced that 6 of the first 8 picks are guaranteed to be Hughes, Kakko, Byram, Cozens, Dach and Turcotte. That leaves Boldy, Caufield, Krebs, Podkolzin, and Zegras for the other two in front of Anaheim, and both of those teams will/should choose a winger. Even if only one of them does, you would have a choice of one of Krebs/Zegras and from two of Boldy, Caufield and Podkolzin. It's possible that you'd have a choice between both of your favored players. So answer the pending question: which of the lower four RW's should be part of the deal? And don't say Perry.

I wish I were as convinced as you. I think the obvious (Hughes and Kakko) along with Turcotte and Byram are locks for top 5 picks. Cozens very well could be but I could see him slipping to 5-7 in favor of Zegras and Caufield. Dach is enticing but his production this season was really worrying, he didn't have as dominant of a season as you'd like from a top 10 pick. I'm merely an armchair scout, but if I'm LA, Detroit, Buffalo, or Edmonton, I'm looking long and hard at Zegras and Caufield. Zegras' hockey sense/IQ is off-the-charts good. He has made plays that have left me thinking "how in the absolute **** did this guy do that!?!?", his "WOW" factor is pretty insane. Same goes for Caulfield, only goal scoring instead of playmaking. Who knows, though. Nobody predicted Arizona to take Hayton last year, but they did.

To answer your question I'm not entirely sure. I think Kase is too good to be included unless MN adds a little and Sprong isn't quite good enough. Terry would probably be who I'd pick but I'm not sure Anaheim wants to trade him.

Terry is a little too much, Sprong and Sherwood are too little. I'm going back to @MNBassman 's formulation: Zucker for the move up and the second. Since we also have pick #29, I shouldn't be holding on to pick #39 like I'm Kate Winslet in Titanic.

Haha, I'd be fine with that trade! I'm just not sure our extremely impatient owner would let that happen, unfortunately cry

I just want to compliment and thank you two for just having had one of the most educated, educating, insightful, and respectful conversations I’ve ever been a (small) part of on this, or any hockey site!
That was very fun to read! Thank you!

Thanks! And don't underplay your part. I really enjoy the intellectual freedom of being able to get out there with an idea, get intelligent criticism, and then change my mind about my prior position. Guys like the two of you are the incentive and the reward.

This draft is deep though. But obviously Zucker for 3 spots makes 0 sense.

Follow the thread all the way through and you'll see that we agreed that the Toronto second is going back the other way.
