Projected Leafs Next Year

Created by: spencer
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 2, 2019
Published: Jun. 2, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Now that Marleau waived his NMC, he's going to LA, so we keep Brown for the 3rd line. Zaitsev and Nylander are clearly the types of players the Wild are on the hunt for right now. Hayden would be a great rough guy the leafs would want for the playoffs. This is my vision of a successful Leafs team.

Marleau: LA has cap problems coming up and will want to get rid of money as well (Cough, Dustin Brown, Cough)

Dumba is a nice piece but the price is waaaay too high. Zaitsev, the 1st and another mid rounder maybe. Not sure if Nylander/Dumba straight across is an even deal. Don't know Dumba well enough to say. I'm allergic to mistake prone defensemen. Don't know where he rates there.

When healthy, Matt Dumba is one of the best RHD in the league

According to The Hockey News he isn't even the best RHD on his team.

From what I can tell he seems like a lighter version of Ed Jovanovski/Bryan McCabe/Dion Phaneuf. He can hit, he can shoot, he can skate, but like all three of the previously mentioned it looks like he lacks Weber's airtight defensive decision-making. At least that is what I'm seeing having looked into him a bit.

Pretty much, hes still good defensively tho, id say take Weber, make him slightly worse in almost every category except for skating, hes better than Weber at that, hits hard, bomb of a shot, and would probably be your best defenseman at clearing the front of the net

All those guys I mentioned were also the best at clearing the front of the net. They also lead the team in sticks busted over crossbars after being scored against. It's possible I'd rather see someone like a Justin Braun or Adam Larson playing across from Rielly. Not as much flash granted, but also airtight skating backwards. The Leafs have no end of defensemen who are offensively talented. It's the stay at home types they need.
