TML 2021 Pietrangelo FTW
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>A_K</b></div><div>The others are younger but they signed for max term so they end up at about the same age IIRC. Doughty's deal looks bad because he was awful last year, but it doesn't mean Pietrangelo can't reference it in his demands. I think Carlson is the best comp. Won a cup, all star, puts up similar numbers in similar deployment. Signed for 8 yrs at age 28. 10.06% of cap. Pretty big SB especially at the beginning of the deal (probably not as extreme as the TOR SB could be but I think there are rules about SB construction). So to take Pietro to the same spot exactly, the deal would be 6 yrs x 8.5m at your proposed cap ceiling. (My 6x9 minimum guess might've been a little too high.) Remove a year from that and he either won't sign, or demand a higher AAV. It wouldn't be such a big deal, except for how tight TOR is looking against the cap. Your roster is one player short and 100k in cap. Every dollar counts.</div></div>
My feeling is you are underestimating the feeling of being able to cash are really really big cheque every July/1. Tavares and Matthews deals are set up that they are paid league minimum in salary and collect the rest in 2 annual payments. I do not know what Marner's is. I suspect it is similar. That's a lot of dough.

Doughty's deal is widely seen as the worst in hockey from a management perspective. Take him out of the equation and the others are younger than AP. And Toronto can signing bonus the hell out of the deal. Others, for the most part, cannot

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>newballcoach</b></div><div>I see Pietrangelo wanting a max term, which will make it tough for Toronto. Based on what Faulk and Spurgeon have signed for this offseason, I like try to get Barrie back at 7/per or see if you can get Hamonic for somewhere around 6 and a shorter term. </div></div>
He might want it, but no one will sign him beyond his 35th birthday. Plus the Leafs can signing bonus the hell out of the contact. Also, local boy. In the few games I've seen Barrie so far I've noticed he has some serious defensive holes. Maybe it improves as they year goes on, who knows. But right now, I'd rather have AP. And there is no way in hell I offer Hamonic any more than 4.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>newballcoach</b></div><div>I think that's a lot for Mikheyev unless he has an absolutely awesome year. I'd be much happier with a Johnsson type 1 year/1mil deal and make him prove it again. Ideally Korshkov can come up and play top 9, maybe even Engvall as well? Engvall fits better as a 4C though.</div></div>
I think Mikheyev is a Calder Dark Horse. I see him with a 40 point per season floor and depending who he plays with and how often up to 70.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>newballcoach</b></div><div>In a perfect world one of Lily or Sandy can play on the 2nd pair next year (leaving Derms to play the other side) and we can survive with a Schmaltz or similar cheap players on the third pair. Signing Andy Greene here I think is an inefficient use of resources. If anything though, this highlights exactly how tight things are going to be.</div></div>
We don't live in a perfect world. Liljegren is in no way a 2nd pairing defenseman, not now, not in a year. To me he and Schmaltz are interchangeable atm. They both have offensive hops, neither is overly physical, and they both make some highlight defensive gaffes. I'd like to see Schmaltz hold down the 2nd RHD slot. Not sure if he can. Hence signing Green and shifting Dermott to the right. We have a very young defense, beyond the first pair there. Having a guy like Green around to mentor Sandin, Liljegren and, even Dermott can only help.

Research shows there is little difference between the chances of a 3rd Rounder and a 7th rounder in terms of being successful hockey players in the NHL. Loading up on lottery tickets makes sense, especially when you have put as many resources into development as the Leafs have.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Random2152</b></div><div>I mean if there is an extension then Lilypad becomes expendable so I'd offer that package you did. That being said I'd offer a 1st + at the deadline if they are looking to move him then. I doubt it but if he is available I expect Doobie will be all over it. FA is still the better course to take imo (since Doobie seems to be good at getting UFA's and roleplayers to buy in) but i'd be fine with piet this year lol.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MG1986</b></div><div>There was some mention on social media, may have been from one of The Athletic writers, that the Blues intend to use Faulk as a top-4 D, as with Parayko and Pietro ahead of him, the Blues are looking to move one of those 2 guys. I am assuming that they deal the older of the 2, and the player with only 1 year remaining on his deal. So, if Pietro is available, do the Leafs try to make a deal? I am not sure the Leafs have a deep enough prospect system to handle such a deal. Without include Robertson, Sadin, or Woll, which in my opinion, are the only untouchable prospects, it would probably take Liljegren, Bracco, Ceci (for cap reasons) and a 1st or 2nd round pick to even get the Blues attention. Problem is, Liljegren is borderline NHL ready as it is, and without the Leafs working out an extension with Pietro ahead of time, this deal, or any deal the Leafs could possibly make to obtain him, seems like overpayment simply for 1 season. I will note, as a counter-argument, Dubas brought in 1-year of Barrie with the clear understanding the Leafs may very well not be able to sign him. So, perhaps this team is going for it. Pietro and Rielly would make a great top pairing. Add Muzzin-Barrie and Dermott/Sandin/Liljegren, and you got yourself a pretty fierce D.</div></div>
Why deal for him when you can get him for cash if you wait a year?

As I said earlier, I am not convinced the media induced reputations of Ceci and Zaitsev are accurate. My feeling is that by the end of a year with their new teams, both Ottawa and Toronto fans will be crowing about how much they ripped off the other guy. And they will both be wrong.

He was drafted 2 years ago and as a 20 year old is being looked at to make the nhl as a defenceman this year if not next. Sounds like he's right on pace or better for a mid first round defenseman</div></div>
When you look at how Sandin is playing now and compare him to how Liljegrin is playing as a 20 year old, Sandin has the edge and it's not close. You can see Sandin starting out the year with the Leafs. A couple of things have to break his way but it is something you can see happening. No matter what happens though, Liljegrin is headed back to the Marlies.
You could easily say that Sandin is ahead of schedule more than Liljegrin is behind it. You could well be right. But how you, me, the Leafs or anyone else sees this doesn't concern me. It's how Liljegrin sees it. If he views it as a challenge, throws down the gauntlet and gets to work, great. But what happens if he goes in the opposite direction and sulks 'Woe is Me"?
That's what worries me.

Barrie will want too much money for Toronto to sign him (8 mil). Remember they have Rielly to sign the year after. Any benchmark Barrie signs for will be exceeded by Rielly. Muzzin is not worth what it will take to sign him at 30 (likely 5.5 over 4). I'd rather give that money to Ceci who is, what, 4 or 5 years younger?
You want to worry about something on D? Worry that Liljegrin is lagging behind in his development. That's a real problem.

I admit it looks a little low on the surface but :
As mentioned it will be a Signing Bonus heavy deal similar to Matthew/Tavares (league minimum salary with millions handed out July/1)
The Leafs will be a good fit for him in terms of talent and game plan, probably the best fit for him in the NHL in that regard.
The off ice financial opportunities available to him in Toronto are rivalled by maybe the New York Rangers and no one else.
and finally he will be earning in American dollars while spending in Canadian dollars which in local terms makes that 6.5 million closer to 8.45 million.

All four of those players are signed to contracts that last 2 years after 35 which makes them buyout proof which lowers their value as assets. Only Quick lacks an NMTC and hasn't threatened to retire if dealt. Also, keep an eye on Texier, he is better than you think.

All those guys I mentioned were also the best at clearing the front of the net. They also lead the team in sticks busted over crossbars after being scored against. It's possible I'd rather see someone like a Justin Braun or Adam Larson playing across from Rielly. Not as much flash granted, but also airtight skating backwards. The Leafs have no end of defensemen who are offensively talented. It's the stay at home types they need.
