Kessel and Zaitsev

Created by: Night_King
Team: 2019-20 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 2, 2019
Published: Jun. 2, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Zaitsev going to Pittsburgh kinda makes sense to me. For Gudbranson, with only two years left at $4mill vs. Five years at $4.5mill. But the Pens taking Zaitsev’s full contract might be a huge risk for them, maybe TOR retains his contract for $500k. In my mind, the trade would look like this:

Nikita Zaitsev ($4mill), Connor Brown ($2.1mill)

For

Erik Gudbranson ($4mill), Dominik Simon ($750k) & a 4th round pick (2019)

Zaitsev could be mentored by Gonchar and Geno, and could perhaps bounce back. Thoughts? Or would you prefer that I don’t retain Zaitsev’s contract?

As Toronto I'd shut down that Zaitsev proposal in a heartbeat, even without the retained salary.

Id rather keep Guddy and Simon for less $ and Simon has a ton more upside than Brown

It's not enough of "cap gap" between Gudbranson and Zaitsev to make the deal worthwhile for the Leafs. Gee, Zaitsev apparently said he would never play for the Leafs". So the Leafs wait for not to report then the Leafs are 4.5m cap free.

Still don't get the point of a lot of these Kessel trades. You're trading someone averaging over a ppg the last two seasons for someone who got 41 points last year and has never been close to Kessel's numbers, then turning around and signing him for more money than you were responsible for with Kessel. Kessel could drop off 20% a year and still be above or at galchenyuk's usual production by the end of this contract.
