I don't see Shatty waiving his NMC for a Canadian team. Also I don't see NYR taking Spooner back, they just got rid of him...

Unsure why NYR fans are so quick to move Shattenkirk. Sure, his offensive production was down, but statistically he was one of the better defensemen on a very weak blue line last season. I still believe he adds value to other teams, and NYR should not have to give up assets just to move him. Other defensemen in their system, on the other hand, would probably cost NYR some of their own assets (such as Staal and Smith). But not Shattenkirk (not yet anyway).

NYR would probably like to keep him, too, as he could mentor some of the younger defensemen in the locker room. If they are trying to make room in order to spend in free agency, there are plenty of other assets they could move (such as Strome, Namestnikov, Vesey, and even Kreider). I may be in the minority, but this would be a move of last resort in my eyes.

I think Rangers would search for a deal that takes more salary off the table. Not only are we retaining the majority of Shattenkirk's contract (for 2 years), but we are taking on another $3.1M for Spooner (on top of the $900K we already retained when we sent him to Edmonton). We are getting the lesser player, while taking on another $1.5M for that 1st year. And not much financial relief for year 2, either. And then sending Picks in the process? No.

I think the Rangers could find a better (even if not great) deal. If not, it would be better to just keep him. Something like this might work for Brendan Smith, but not Shattenkirk.

Hard no. Shattenkirk actually has value, and the Rangers got rid of Spooner last season and got better as a team because of it. Switch out Shatty & a 3rd for Smith & Staal, and I'd be inclined to say yes

EDIT: No retention of course
