So I was listening to leafs lunch where Gord Miller had an interesting idea. Toronto and Marleau have had the conversation to move on. He wants to go to S.J, ANH or LA. These teams really dont have the space for Marleau at 6.25mill or even half of that. The easy solution to this would be trading Marleau with an extra asset to a team with a lot of cap space to buy him out then he signs a really cheap deal with one of those teams. For example let's say Ottawa takes the deal and buys him out, he is a 35+contract so the cap hit will remain but the actually money is even less. This is a win for every side and makes total sense.
What do you think?
It is possible as suggested. The better team to do the "buyout" is Arizona if they have cap space this season. Arizona trades to the Leafs Hossa who is paid 1m per year for two years on LTIR. That 2m the Leafs eat in Hossa salary would pay for about Marleau's buyout by Arizona.
