Adding RD with SJ and VGK

Initial Creation Date: Jun. 17, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think these are two guys the Leafs look at in the market who won't cost much. They're not necessarily studs, but help the D out tremendously. Putting Kadri on Matthews/Nylander wing gives them a grittier player there.

Kap has the skills to be a better version of Hyman and with some offensive growth could really benefit Tavares and Marner. I really like Zacha as a 3C, he is an excellent PK defensive guy. NJ has needs in both of those areas and has too many centres, so that's a move I bet they would look at.

Not a lot of salary cap room to move but I think it provides a bit of a framework for what the Leafs might do to upgrade the D with lower cost options and not lose Kadri.

May not be perfect, but you still have pick ammunition to upgrade the D at the deadline if you want or space for Lily to push through at RD.

Some other RD players I would look at in this approximate cost range:
Murphy or Gustafsson from Chicago
Brodie from Calgary
Tanev (yuck) from Van
Mayfield from NYI
Pateryn from Min
Demers from AZ
K Miller from Bos

Guys that would be more expensive but I'd also look at:
Hamonic, Spurgeon, Larsson, Hamilton/Pesce, Stecher.

Where do you see the Leafs going? I'd rather see 2 2nd pairing guys than lots of assets on a #1. Getting a jump on an impending UFA may be cheaper and let you get something signed.

New Jersey and Vancouver easily say no to those trades. Marleau signed an over 35 contract so there is no use buying him out when its the same amount on your cap. Kapanen is also getting a couple million more then that and Johnsson is only worth a 2nd round pick. Marner for 8 years will also cost you over $12 million

Vancouver may want more I agree, not sure how to make the Marleau situation work to be honest. This is just one potential option. I understand how the buyout rules work.

I don't think the Devils trade is too unbalanced. Zaitsev helps them at RD (he's better than Carrick and Santini) and gives them cost certainty while they have lots of ELC's. They may be able to work a pick out of Toronto, but since Brown is playing in their top-9 it's not awful. Zacha is going to be their 4C next year and play 10 minutes a game, I don't think he is going to have more value to them than that.

That 3rd and 4th Lines are weak as hell, even if Hyman pushes everyone one line down.

You brought in 2 x Zaitsev with the proper value of his contract, i would stop sitting on picks ( as i said many times before, we are set for five years and the farm is healthy ) and bring in some Top RHDs instead

Marleau proly only waveing for SW Teams.

I love hearing from you, we always have different slants on things. I think that's definitely one strategy they could go with, especially assuming that Liljegren should be ready to start October 2020 (if not sooner) and maybe another Marlie the year or two after. Braun is going to be an easy add if SJ signs Karlsson like is rumoured. Maybe packaging Johnsson with some picks and going after Hamonic or Spurgeon is a better move?

3rd and 4th lines are basically competitions, with Marlies guys and Leafs leftovers. I don't think rolling 3 scoring lines is the way to go, I'm not sure, with the players available, how you craft a 3rd line. Unless you leave Kadri down there with Mikheyev and Bracco, and that becomes an offensive line. But now you'll want AJ for that other left wing spot, so you can't trade him for a D now. I'd rather be weaker at 3rd line than 1RD.

In my books Sandin and Liljegren are filling 3rd Pair in 2020/2021 Season yes.

My main targets for D are Spurgeon, Manson, Pesce ( maybe Hamilton ), i even go for Miller too, but hes a patching not upgradin. You were in my thread, youve seen it. re-signing Muzzin over Dermott next Season, cause while Offence is like 24y on average, you need to bring in maturity at least in D then ( Muzzin & Spurgeon ).

The thing where i part my ways with 60% of TML fan base is, i think Kadri should be gone, keeping Johnsson before him while he can still bring 1st Round pick in at the moment, one more "seeing red" from him and we will be stuck with till he walks off when his contract ends. So for the third line you keep Johnsson & Kapanen and pack them with mediocre C or some kid on the rise that can be fished inside the trade. ( Jankowski, Wallmark, Janmark etcetc )
