If I'm not mistaken, Hayes cannot sign an 8-year deal due to the fact that he was acquired after the trade deadline. Could be wrong though.

Then what's the point in acquiring his rights? But I have no idea what the rule is

Great question. I am not a fan of acquiring UFA rights; especially when you have no idea whether or not the guy has any interest in playing for your club. But then again, wasting a 5th rounder isn't too big of a deal. I'm more concerned with Chuck's questionable player acquisitions in the past few days lol.

Can't be signed for 8. He was acquired just to gain exclusive negotiating rights prior to UFA period.
