Philly with TOR trade

Description
This is the quickest way forward for the Flyers, with a single trade and RFA signings.

There’s one trade I see as even, which addresses speed and adds a PK player, in RFA Kapanen. Toronto gets a puck rushing defender in Gotisbehere, on a defense that lacks a puck rusher and pp quarterback. Totonrto’s defense is looking pretty bad. IMO, Kapanen gets 3.75mil or better, and I can’t see Toronto affording that, nor getting a king’s ransom for a guy they won’t pay 3.75mil.
Toronto deals from their depth to address a weakness. This trade doesn’t address cap issues for the Leafs, but this does not unduly upset their cap issues and again, it addresses a real weakness on their team. Gotisbehere is on a great contract for his production. Kapanen is pretty much a third line RW behind two much better RWs, and you are getting a top 3 defenseman signed long term on a good contract for the current 3rd line RW.

THE UFA signing is:
Elliot (or Talbot or Mike Smith) at 2G to provide veteran presence for rookie Hart in net

The team speed weakness is addressed with Kapanen, maybe Frost playing Fulltime (joining Koneckny as a offensively talented speedster) and Kapanen and his speed on the PK creates a lot of chances for SH goals. This gives the Flyers a deep forward unit and a 4th line of Laughton-Frost-Hartman, with Raffl as 13th is one of the best 4th lines. (In fact the third line of JVR-Patrick-Kapanen is probably a 2nd line on most teams).

Provorov and Niskanen will be 1st pairing, with Sanheim and Braun on 2nd pairing, and Myers and either Hagg or Morin on 3rd pairing, with one them being the 7th. It takes away some offense from the blueline, but with steady Niskanen, Braun and Hagg/Morin, hopefully Provo, Sanheim and Myers can replace that production.

This is a 13 forward, 7 defensemen lineup with just enough cap space, for call ups

Toronto is re-signing Kappy. You can get Kadri for Ghost.

Maybe, but Ghost is exactly what Toronto needs and Kadri isn’t exactly what Philly needs, IMO.

I think the TOR need for Ghost is greater than PHI’s need for Kapanen. To me it’s a no brainer for both sides.

And Ghost is only 26, signed cheaply, so its no real big difference in age and contract over the next 3-4 years. I know it sucks to lose a 22 year, but IMO Toronto has a huge weakness on the blueline and you have to deal from strength to address weakness.

(At least I didn’t offer Hagg)

I don't see it being a no brainer at all. Gostisbehere makes the same money as Zaitsev. How is his contract cheap and Zaitsev's brutal? Plus he's a left shot defenseman who isn't better than Rielly or Muzzin. So would he slot into their 3rd pair making 4.5m? That doesnt seem ideal. I do agree that Kapanen could be moved for a defenseman but not Gostisbehere. They would want either Myers or Sanheim.

Tyler: Agree with you. And I'm not saying it's a bad deal. But you have to realize, that on this site, ALL Leafs Dmen (except Reilly) have negative value. Somehow all Dmen all the 30 other teams are NHL calibre but on the good Leaf team, the are all lousy.

n no way do I think Zaitsev’s deal is brutal, I think its too long in length, but he has value. And certainly he is paid the same as Ghost based on his offensive explosion, that seems gone now. He wants a trade though. Anyways I digress.

Reilly and Muzzin are good, but wheres the puck rushing, wheres the pt production going to come from on the blueline. With Hainsey and Gardiner going, a nice mid aged point producing dman, LD or RD is needed, IMO. I’m not saying the defense is atrocious, but beyond Reilly and Muzzin its very young, inexperienced and certainly nothing like a contender quality.

Im not saying the TOR defense is poor, but its very weak and young, and it’s the one area that definitely needs an upgrade if TOR is ever to become a real contender, and with all the key cogs on offense signed long term and for lots of cap space, wheres the cap space going to come from to address the defense. And with the UFA, RFA prices, how do you upgrade in the future, say when muzzin goes?

Its my opinion that a Gotisbehere is more of a need for TOR over the next 2-3 years than Kapanen.

getting ride of Kadri creates a much bigger hole on your roster then trading Kappy. Leafs have a deep prospect pool of wingers but no centremen at this point.... just really don't want to see Gautier playing 3rd line center...

Rielly, Muzzin, and Dermott are all great puck movers. Zaistev is the only other known quantity and yeah he's bad, but the Muzzin - Zaitsev pairing works well. Rosen is also coming up and he was constantly transitioning the puck.

The leafs have use 4-1 and 3-2 combos for their 1st and 2nd power play respectively. Ghost wouldn't be pushing Rielly off that #1 spot, so he'd get 2nd unit minutes unless their new PP coach pushes them back to a 3-2 style.

Kapanen is also signing. And with Marleau gone they can afford him. And if they couldn't, then they couldn't afford Gostisbehere.

I like Gostisbehere, and to be honest I give this trade a hard look, but it isn't as perfect a fit as you'd like to think due to Gostisbehere playing LD. But if they were to do this trade I'd be happy with;

Gostisbehere - Rielly
Muzzin - Zaitsev
Rosen - Dermott
